South Yorkshire has certainly been the start of many a pro riders cycling careers over the years, and I’m sure more will following judging by the standard of racing at today’s Out of the Saddle Road race at Thurcroft.
The home town of the Downing brothers, it certainly has a course that sorts the men out from the boys, a small circuit covered twenty five times, with deceptively hard climbs and fast straights, it bodes for good racing. More like a high paced criterium at times.
The sun shone on the fifty five starters with a great turn out for the Pete Hinchcliffe memorial race, by lap three we had guys trying to break away but it was soon pulled back together.
With a prime on lap five won by Karl Freeman Team Wheelguru, it lit the spark for the start of some action with two riders attacking soon after Steve Fidler, Dave Hinde racing team and Richard Jones Achieve Skinnergate. These worked well together and soon had a gap of 41 seconds over the chasing riders.
Karl freeman tried to break away on many an occasion to be brought back by the peloton, by the end of lap 20 we still had the two leaders with a gap of 47 seconds with the main bunch looking like they were settling for third place.
Four laps to go it was Max Spedding’s turn off the front from PH Mas RT, only to be brought back soon after, next lap Andrew Sedgewick, Langsett cycles, Jamie Harper Sheffrec CC, Robert Pape Clifton CC got a ten second gap.
As we entered the bell lap the leaders had a minute over the main field with the bunch all back together.
In a hard fought tussle to the line Steve Fidler took the win with Richard Jones second, Max Spedding jumped the main bunch to take third, with Alex Orrell Turner Wheelbase taking the bunch sprint for fourth from in form Giles Pidcock Chevin cycles in fifth.
It was a fantastic event, with no spills or crashes, problem free and well attended at the finish by an appreciative crowd. The organising team certainly know how to put a quality
event on. With superb back up from the NEG and enthusiastic smiling marshalls, what a difference sunshine makes. Roll on 2015.
