HARIBO Cycling Team (formerly Team Sportscover) announced on the web that Dean Downing will join the team as a Directeur Sportif whilst current DS Mark Barry will move on to focus on a junior development squad aligned to a UCI Continental Team in 2015.

Mark Barry joined as the Junior Directeur Sportif in 2011 and has made significant contributions to the team’s junior set-up, which has set the standard for junior cycling teams in the UK, whilst the senior squad has served as a spring board allowing our junior riders to progress into the senior ranks within a structured and supportive environment.

The team’s focus on developing its U23 squad is reinforced by the appointment of the former Yorkshire pro rider and multiple National Champion Dean Downing as Directeur Sportif. Dean commented “I’m delighted to be joining the team for 2015. Ashley and I spoke back in 2006 when the team was formed and it has been great to see its riders and the team as a whole progress each season. Since day one, his vision was to develop riders and the team has remained true to its focus. There are some really talented riders coming through the system and I’m excited at the prospect of sharing my experience with them and developing the next generation of professional riders.”

Mark Barry commented; “I have enjoyed three fantastic years developing young riders within Yorkshire Professional Cycling and together with David and Ashley we have helped set the bar for other junior teams which has improved the standard of junior British cycling. After lengthy talks we have agreed that our voluntary positions in the sport, combined with the increasing demands of each squads growth, require more focus in each area, my move to a UCI Continental team will allow me to further my goals within Junior cycling.”

The team with Dean Downing onboard say they intend to develop a more robust programme for their Under 23 riders who have progressed through their programme from junior level with an increased number of stage races complimenting the increasingly strong UK racing programme.

Ashley Brown, Team Principle, went on to say “Whilst it may sound like a cliché, the success of the team has largely been down to the ‘team behind the team’. I would like to thank Mark for his support in developing the team to its current position. This change in our set-up marks our dedication to growing the team in the best way for our riders.”

“The change in our structure will bring a renewed focus to develop young riders in the senior age category and I am delighted to announce that David Brown will continue his role with the team and the addition of Dean adds a wealth of experience to the teams management. We have been good friends for over 10 years and have always worked together in support of various projects. He fully understands our goals and has a great understanding of our structure so I’m sure he’ll bring a lot to the table.”

Dean Downing will also be in a coaching role with Trainsharp next year. More on that shortly on VeloUK.net
