Grimston, Norfolk, October 19th | From Fergus Muir

Eighteen year-old Danny Parker (Greenwheel Cycles) won the King’s Lynn CC Road Race for third and fourth cat riders, outsprinting Tom Trimble (CC Ashwell) after 49 miles of racing. Twenty-nine seconds later Andrew Bean (Wisbech Whs) took the bunch sprint for third place from Gavin Carter (Stowmarket & District).

It was a sunny morning on the Grimston-Gayton-Gt Massingham circuit, but there was a strong crosswind from the left at the finish and, in the last few hundred metres protected by police-accredited marshals, Parker was able to keep right, denying Trimble the full benefit of his slipstream. Twenty-nine seconds later Wisbech Wheeler Andrew Bean won the sprint for third from Gavin Carter (Stowmarket & District CC). Local (Norfolk) riders in the top ten were Philip Large, Iceni Velo’s Narborough member who was sixth, 40 year-old Darren Rutterford carrying the black and gold colours of the new Aylsham Road Club, eighth and Ben Keeley (9th), top finisher from the promoting club.

King’s Lynn CC were returning to road race promotion 42 years on from the demise of their once well-known early-season King’s Lynn Australian Pursuit. Early breaks were attempted by, among others, Andrew Minns (45 Road Club) with time trialist Paul Jay (VeloVelocity) and later by Nick Perks (Velo Schils) and Nigel Hobday (Cambridge CC).

However none of these stuck. At Grimston with one 12 mile lap to go Stephen Fuller (Cambridge CC) and tall young Peterborough rider Danny Parker had 37 seconds advantage over a lone chaser – Tom Trimble of Herts village club CC Ashwell. Fuller faded, but gave Trimble a brief respite in his pursuit. Trimble soon teamed up with Parker and the pair worked together to stay clear to the finish where Parker added overall victory to wins he had already secured in the Points and the – somewhat grandly titled – King of the Mountains competitions.
