Raleigh’s Maverick range is designed for the rider who wants to take their bike on and off road whilst their RX range could also be just as versatile

The Mavericks at Raleigh Go Off & On Road

If there is one thing I don’t like about my Colnago it is that it’s designed for skinny tyres and whilst I could perhaps fit tyres that may be suitable for off road, I’d rather have a bike that is suitable for both and Raleigh has two ranges of bikes that fit the bill, the Maverick and the Cyclo-Cross range.
The reason I’d like a bike to take on and off road is simply roads are so busy these days, especially on the Wirral and it’s here in this area that there is a well known stretch of a bike path perfect for Maverick or a one of the Raleigh’s Cross bikes.
The Maverick is not new in the Raleigh range as it was one of the first ever mountain bikes. The new Maverick says Raleigh opens up the option for commuters to take in tarmac roads as well as gravel or muddy tracks. It’s been designed as an all round bike with the look of a racer and disc brakes to make stopping easy on two of the models and cantilevers on the other.
Built from Reynolds double butted chromoly tubing, Raleigh have used classic touring geometry and tweaked the handling to suit off multi-terrain use. It is they say, a bike that lets you explore everywhere.
The range has three models from £750 for the ‘Tour’ with muguards, triple chainset etc; to £850 for the disc brake equipped Elite and £1150 for the Comp.
Here’s some more info on these models which offer the opportunity of a weekend touring, a century ride, the daily commute, the shortcut on the towpath, a chance to try cyclocross – the Maverick is designed to do all this and so much more.

Raleigh’s Cross Bikes
As well as the Maverick though, there is the ‘cross bike range with race geometry and lighter frames. There are five models from the RX Team (£3,500) for the serious cyclo-cross racer wanting a bike with disc brakes and carbon frame to two of the more budget priced bikes such as the RX Comp (£1.000) and RX Pro (£1,500).
Both these latter models have disc brakes for sure footed stopping power and alloy frames. For true multi purpose, the Maverick models comes with rack mounts whilst the RX Pro doesn’t but, the RX Comp does. The Comp also as a lovely red paintjob which makes it my favourite. Here are some details of two of the RX (Cyclo-Cross) range from Raleigh which are suitable for off and on road use:

With a new lighter alloy frame and carbon bladed fork the RX Comp makes a perfect race bike, but with mudguard and rack eyelets you can use it for everyday duties as well
