A week out from the World Cup in Milton Keynes, the top British female riders received a boost after dominating the Superprestige Cyclo-cross race at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday.

Former British champion Nikki Harris, who had a great World Cup series last season backed up well after her fifth placed ride in the World Cup on Saturday in Koksijde. On the F1 motor racing circuit used in the past for many cycling events including the Tour de France and World Junior Road Championships, Harris found the course suited her well and made the most of it recording her first major victory of the year.

Harris said afterwards she was really happy with the victory after having pushed herself from the start. In second place was British Champion Helen Wyman and the duo now head for Milton Keynes and a very British style cyclo-cross course in the World Cup next Saturday.

Helen Wyman meanwhile explained on her website  www.helenwyman.com “I had a good start and led for a good part of the first lap. A slight error cost me the lead and Nikki Harris put in one of the best laps I’ve seen, taking out over 30 seconds lead. Cant was following her, but appeared to blow a little and slipped back and eventually pulled out. I kept on pursuing Nikki, and got close by the finish to get 2nd at around 10 seconds. The best rider won, and it was a British 1-2, only six days before the Milton Keynes World Cup. Lets hope for a repeat next week”.

Special mention for Junior and national Trophy series leader Amira Mellor who was 13th after a great ‘warmup’ for the World Cup in Milton Keynes which she will also ride.
