Press Release – Metaltek Kuota RT evolves into SportGrub Kuota Cycling Team for 2015
Having had the misfortune of losing a major financial backer on the 1st February this year, the Metaltek Kuota Team were immediately up against the odds of any success in 2014 as riders left for more secure environments. Those that stayed loyal to Team ‘Boss’ Andy Swain not only knuckled down but shone when faced with adversity. This made the year a difficult one off the bike, behind the scenes, but was made possible by some fantastic helpers, supporters and the dedication of our riders and sponsors.
The Team placed 6th overall in both the hotly contested ITV4 Pearl Izumi Tour Series and The British Cycling Elite National Series, proving they were more than up to the task in both Circuit Races and Road Races throughout the year.
Moving into 2015, the Team will be sponsored by a new Sports Nutrition retailer www.sportgrub.com this is a new venture set up by Andy and new Commercial Partner Chris Dunkley. DHW Agencies still remain heavily involved, supplying both the Kuota Bikes and the striking GSG Clothing. There are other exciting new sponsors and suppliers that will be announced shortly.
Highlights of the 2014 Metaltek Kuota Season
Our National ‘A’ palmares included Rhys Lloyd’s 5th and 9th positions in the Stockton and Rydale Grand Prixs, Dexter Gardias’ 7th place in the Stafford Kermesse, Dan Fleeman’s astonishing 14th up against the World Tour Pro’s in the National Road Champs at Abergavenny, Dan and Ben Stockdale’s 8th & 9th in the UCI Beaumont Trophy. Zach May was crowned Welsh Circuit Race Champion and also Silver Medallist in the National Scratch Track event. Dan also mixed his season with his passion of Mountain Biking and took the National Marathon title.
We would like to thank the sponsors continuing their support into next season including Kuota Bikes, DHW Agencies, GSG Sportswear, Beet IT Sport, High5 Nutrition, Continental and Paddy & Scott’s Coffee.
The Team has kept the core of its 2014 squad and also helped two of the riders – Zach May & Rhys Lloyd to move into the UCI set up of NFTO Pro Cycling along with 2014 DS Dave Povall of which we’re very proud. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them and wish them the best for their respective futures.
We would also like to welcome our new riders to the squad, and look forward to the next year together. New additions to the Team include Richard Hepworth (prev Giordana), Adam Duggleby (prev Wheelbase) Junior Tour of Wales Stage Winner, Ollie Maxwell (prev Windmill Wheels) and former World Pursuit Champion Colin Sturgess. Colin obviously brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Team and will be instrumental both on and off the bike.
Whilst Dan Fleeman has flown the flag for the team for a few years now on and off road, the return of Colin Sturgess will be keenly watched. On the track, he won Gold at the 1989 Worlds in the Pursuit and a year later was British RR Champion. He’s also a winner of the former classic the Tour of the Cotswolds. He recently tweeted ..
.. making us think he may be kicking some legs come the 2015 season as may others in the team which is for sure one of the strongest non UCI British teams for 2015.
