After finishing a career high of 12th in the Milton Keynes World Cup, Ian Field is looking for another top 20, this time in the World Cyclo Cross championships this weekend in the Czech Republic.

After getting ill over Christmas, Ian’s preparations for the Worlds were given a setback as he explained to Luke Webber of British Cycling “From April, my training was based around the Milton Keynes World Cup – which went well – and the Worlds, which went a bit wrong when I got ill for three weeks in December. That has hampered things a fair bit”.

A few weeks ago in Abergavenny, Ian had recovered enough to win his fourth British title but he doesn’t feel he’s back to the peak of form he had in Milton Keynes. “I don’t think in all honesty I’m quite there, definitely at the beginning of January the numbers had dropped off. Today was the first time I felt good for a while, so hopefully that’s just in time” he said on Tuesday.

Ian will be racing his seventh World Championships for Great Britain but knows there’s no pressure on him. “I’m not going to win the race so immediately the pressure isn’t really there – only the pressure from myself to achieve a top-20. It’s more of an opportunity to gain that rather than any pressure which is quite a nice situation to be in”.

“Besides, things have gone really well this season. I set my goals and achieved an awful lot of them, so this would be the icing on the cake.”
