Stephen Cummings (Qhubeka) beat race favorite Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) to the victory on a mountain top finish.
Nine riders took off from the get-go of today’s 149 kilometre long and mountainous second race of the Mallorca Challenge called Trofeo Andratx-Mirador d’Es Colomer. As the terrain started to rise, three riders including the 2014 Tour of Britain winner Van Baarle jumped on the pedals and quickly distanced the rest of the group. The others were Johann van Zyl (Team MTN-Qhubeka), and Jose Goncalves (Caja-Rural).
Reaching the upper slopes of the climb to Puig Major with 30 kilometres to go, the lead of the front trio was under a minute to the chasing peloton but they fought relentlessly to stay clear. At the foot of the three kilometre long uphill finish, the front trio were swept up by the sharp end of what was left of the peloton fighting for that valuable first victory of 2015.
Under the one kilometre banner, a group of 20 riders were fighting it out but as the climb went on, gaps were opening between riders and Steve Cummings got clear of Valverde and held a slender lead all the way to the line for another victory for the rider from the Wirral.
“I’m really happy with today’s victory. I knew I had done a lot of good work over the winter so I’d like to thank the team for the amazing work they did and chance they gave me to focus on today’s race. I was able to come back to the front right near the end and snatch the victory, so I’m really happy with the result.â€
