News – 100 days until Velothon Wales
With just 100 days to go until Velothon Wales, the organisers have today (Friday 6 March) unveiled the planned routes of the two completely closed road distances, via a highly interactive and innovative route map.
The event, which is taking place on Sunday 14 June, will take up to 15,000 cyclists on an unforgettable, traffic-free journey out of Cardiff city centre and past some of South Wales’ most iconic landmarks. From today, those taking part in the event will be able to prepare for the event both mentally and physically with a state-of-the-art, interactive route map.
The interactive map will guide riders through the route, helping them to get to grips with challenging climbs such as The Tumble and Caerphilly Mountain. At every stage, the current gradient is illustrated at the bottom of the screen and updated as the distance increases.

With breath-taking drone footage of the route, historical facts, top tips on taking on certain parts of the route and climbing statistics, riders will be able to fully immerse themselves in the challenge that they are taking on in exactly 100 days’ time.
The interactive map, which can be found on the Velothon Wales website, also contains images of the main iconic landmarks to look out for along the way.
Velothon Wales’ event director Andrew Taylor said: “With only 100 days to go until Velothon Wales, we are well and truly on the countdown to what promises to be the biggest and most exciting cycling event that Wales has ever seen.
“With thousands of cyclists travelling from outside of Wales, many of whom have come from countries in mainland Europe and even further afield, the interactive map will provide riders with the opportunity to really familiarise themselves with the route in a truly engaging way. This will help them to not only mentally prepare for the challenge – it will also give them a feel for the incredible scenery and iconic landmarks they will experience along the way.â€
As the event draws closer, the Velothon Wales website will also feature more detail on the exact road closures and traffic diversions that will be in place on the day. Organisers are working closely with the various local authorities along the route to ensure that the event causes minimal disruption to local communities and as a result, the current route may be subject to small changes in the lead up to the event.
In addition to the two main routes, there will also be a UCI sanctioned 1.1 professional race taking place after the amateur event, which will see many of the world’s best riders taking on the very same route. The two loops of The Tumble and three of Caerphilly Mountain (below) will take their total distance up to 194km.
Welsh Cycling’s chief executive officer, Anne Adams-King said: “With 100 days to go until Velothon Wales, we are excited to welcome thousands of cyclists to Wales. The route passes by some of Wales’ most famous landmarks, and also provides a unique challenge for participants, with the famous climbs of The Tumble and Caerphilly mountain. We hope the people of Wales will be inspired to get on their bikes and also support those taking on the challenge of Velothon Wales.â€
There are still a limited number of places available for both routes via the event’s official charity partners, including Gold Charity Partners Save the Children and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. To see the full list of places available, please click here.
