Women’s Strade Bianche – Armitstead Second
The first Strade Bianche for women resulted in a win for Megan Guarnier of the Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team with her British teammate Lizzie Armitstead second.
Guarnier and Armitstead were part of a breakaway group of five riders and attacking in turn, it was Guarnier who got the chance to solo to the win and the American took it with both hands.
“Megan and Lizzie both tried to attack” said the teams DS. “After the others reacted right away on an attack of Lizzie, Megan got a little bit of space from the other riders in the front group.”
“It was very impressive how she managed to hold on and win this great race. The team is riding very strong at the moment, we kicked off this year in a great way.†Guarnier was very happy about her victory. “On the penultimate section of gravel, Lizzie attacked on the steep section of gravel. As the road leveled out, I countered Lizzie’s attack and had a gap”.
“I was solo, so at that point I just had keep pushing on and hoping that I could make it to the finish. I knew Lizzie was behind me, and I know she had her work cut out for her. From what I hear, the attacks from the other riders were relentless and Lizzie had to cover all of them. It gives you a lot of stength knowing that your teammates have your back.”
