Stars of the British peloton aplenty featuring in the 140 riders on the entry list for the first ever Chorley Grand Prix on April 4

Startlist – Chorley Grand Prix
Winner of the Star Trophy in 2014, Yanto Barker, will wear number 1 for the inaugural Chorley Grand Prix on Saturday, April 4. Eight man teams for the race will help shape the race over the distance of 116 miles.
On a hilly 23 mile circuit, the race is not expected to come down to a bunch kick but then that’s been said about stages in Doon Hame (Scotland) and other races and still they have. Being the first major race though, there will be an element of teams testing each other and with the teams stronger than ever in 2015, not just in the quality of the riders but also the depth to the teams, will make it, and the other events in the series, quite brutal at times.
The course. Click the images above to display a bigger image. Chorley – Rivington – Belmont – Abbey Village – Withnell – Brinscall – Wheelton – Buckshaw – Chorley
Whilst the start below is an indication of the teams entered, as with all major races, who is on the entry list and who the teams start with can be two different things. Especially in this first event when teams will have made their entries whilst still testing their riders to find their strengths and the appropriate events for them within any given line-up.
The majority of the riders listed below however should be on the start line in Chorley.
As well as Barker wearing number one, the event will see Aussie rider Steele Von Hoff (NFTO) line up after showing last weekend in the Jock Wadley he is going to be a handful for the other teams to contain.
Not only that, his team NFTO have other riders like the tearaway Eddie Dunbar who can fly like an Eagle on the climbs as can local Ian Bibby and they’ll too be a handful. There are though many unanswered questions about all the team’s strengths especially on a circuit which is said to have a five to ten minute climb every lap where splits should be opened.
This will be the first race where the top teams have all raced together in 2015 and so the guessing game of who will win will continue right up to the finish. For example, we have yet to see a team many feel is the strongest, Madison Genesis, race this year and they will go into the event on the back of racing the Tour of Normandy as will JLT Condor.
The race will also see Raleigh – GAC with a new look rider wise in the iconic team colours and a rider to watch there should be Evan Oliphant who always seems to have great form at this time of the year. One battle I’m looking forward to is that of the two Polish riders, Marcin Bialoblocki and Raleigh’s Karol Domagalski!
Team Wiggins have a small team, five riders as against the other teams eight but have some dangerous riders for the other teams to try and contain like the Isle of Man’s Mark Christian. As well as the UCI teams, the race will also see many non-UCI teams taking part like the well drilled development team of Catford CC Equipe/Banks and Pedal Heaven who are both coached by Trainsharp.
SportGrub KUOTA Cycling Team have also been at the sharp end of races recently with the likes of Will Bjergfelt. Their team has the ‘climber’ in Dan Fleeman in the line up too, a former pro with a World Tour team.
The race will also see the debut in a Prem as a DS for Dean Downing with riders like Russell Hampton in the Bioracer kitted out Polypipe racing team. Number 99 is also interesting, James McCallum, who we understand had retired in 2014 but after a season of cross, may well be fired up to race the road again? Yes Jimmy?
The question of whether Phil Griffiths of Yellow Ltd will have a team has been answered as Giordana-Mitsubishi Electric RT have four riders entered including Dave Clarke who has been busy racing in Algeria.
Yanto Barker will wear number 1 in the race as last years winner of the Star Trophy.
Looking at the entry, there appears to be around twelve teams capable of riding in the race for their team leaders and that may have a bearing on how the race pans out. IE, if the break of the day doesn’t have riders from those teams in it, the test will be whether they, along with riders from the other smaller squads can control the enthusiasm to get away from the bigger teams. It will be an exciting race for sure.
With the summit of the climb coming 11 kilometres into the circuit on a lap of 37 kilometres, it’s not a climbers circuit by any means but that hill will for sure see many a rider distanced as the hammer goes down from the off. I c a n n o t wait!
See you there!
