Stevie shines amongst premier cyclists
Last Sunday’s Angela Davies Memorial Road Race in Aberystwyth included a strong entry list from some of the top domestic professional teams. A strong JLT Condor team sent ex UK professional road champion Kristian House and 2013 Tour de Korea winner Mike Cuming whilst Madison Genesis had 2013 Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Tom Scully, Mike Northey, the 2013 New Zealand National Criterium Champion and Mark McNally, 2014 Tour of Britain King of the Mountains forming part of their squad.

However, as the flag dropped at the start of the 75 mile race it was local man Daniel Davies (unattached) who broke free from the peloton and formed what would be the breakaway group of the day. He was joined on the road by another eight riders including another local, Stevie Williams, now riding for the Pedal Heaven Racing Team after a successful two years in the junior ranks.

The breakaway had a good mixture of representatives with two riders from the JLT and Madison teams as well as Rhys Lloyd from the strong NFTO professional team. This meant that their team mates in the main bunch were unlikely to give chase.

They quickly forged a lead of two minutes by the time the race arrived at Trawscoed from Llanfarian and they entered the first of four circuits to circumnavigate Llanafan Saw Mills, Pontrhydygroes, New Row & Abermagwr working well together. The New Row climb took its toll on some riders in the peloton and soon there were four different groups on the road.

The second group, including Gruff Lewis and Kristian House were closing slightly on the leaders by lap three and Daniel Davies, who started the day’s action was now falling back to this group.

On the last circuit the leaders were down to five riders, Tom Scully, Lloyd, Williams, Cuming and Handley. The final big climb of the day was from Pontrhydygroes to Devils Bridge on the B4343, known to local cyclists as the ‘49’er’. This one mile steep 16% climb was to be the springboard for the JLT riders and first year senior Williams to leave their companions.

As they entered Devils Bridge and headed towards Aberystwyth for the final leg, the JLT team had the upper hand by having two riders in the group. The JLT tactics were to work the lone Pedal Heaven rider over and it was Handley who just had the upper hand in the sprint finish at Southgate to deny a local win.

Tom Swindler of the promoting Ystwyth Cycling Club won the Angela Davies award as first Ystwyth CC rider to finish, which was presented to him by Angela’s family at the awards ceremony.
