Report & Results – Modbury Spring Road Races
(Thanks to Will Hornby)
Cycle Sport Sport South Hams organised two races on Sunday the 15th of March and both were held over a 3 lap course for a total race distance of 39 miles. The Anchor Inn Ugborough kindly provided additional prizes for the winners of both races.
The woman’s race which was also the first round of the Kalas South West Women’s Race Series took shape at the beginning of the second lap. An attack by Natalie Grinczer and Fiona Hunter-Johnston saw them move clear of the bunch which began to stretch out on the climb from the town towards California Cross. By the time the breakaway duo reached Kitterford Cross their lead over a now depleted bunch was a minute and continued to grow as they headed back towards Modbury.
It was just before the end of the second lap that Natalie’s climbing strength began to tell with Fiona struggling to hold the wheel. Just before Leighmoor Cross at the steepest part of the climb is where Natalie made her winning move quickly gaining time on Fiona and within 2 miles she had over a minute and when she took the left turn at Kitterford Cross and the final run down towards Ermington an impressive 5 minutes on those left in the bunch. Even with such a commanding lead Natalie continued to push on as she sped towards Modbury and the finish line for a deserving victory. Fiona held on the second place finish well clear of the bunch. Jessica Duffy from Feather Cycles Racing took the bunch sprint for third place.

MENS RACE
The Men’s Race was run off at very fast pace with numerous attacks from the bunch notably by clubs such as the University of Bath Cycling Club and Giant Cycling Club – Halo Films but none of these moves resulted in a breakaway group being formed. Rather than a winning move move moving away from the bunch it was more a case of the tough climbs taking their toll on riders particularly between the town and California Cross. By the third lap it was estimated that less than half of the original 72 starters remained in contact and in with a chance of victory.
It was on the last hill before Modbury that the race really ignited with those left in bunch realising it was now or never. James Cartilidge from Plymouth Corinthian CC took the initiative launching himself off the front of the bunch. One of the Somerset RC riders tried to close the gap to James and this move was quickly covered by Cartilidges club mate Adrian Sluman. This flurry of action did not result in the winning move which came when Oliver Wright attacked near the Modbury Industrial Estate quickly followed by the ever alert Andrew Parker and Adrian Sluman. After such a hard final effort it was Parker who proved the strongest holding on to win the sprint from Oliver and Adrian by a bike length.
