The organisers of the Tour de Normandie proposed a novel route for this 4th stage. Indeed, the city of L’Aigle had never hosted the event, so that on arrival in Bagnoles de l’Orne, the final circuit was modified with a finish at the top of a hill 800 meters long.

After 40 kilometres, the first breakaway of the day emerged with six riders Arnaud Descamps (VC Rouen), Ivan Garcia Cortina (AWT Greenway), Andres Vangstad (Team Sparbanken Sor), Michael Northey (Madison Genesis), Alistair Slater (An Post Chain Reacton) and Taco Van Der Hoorn (Cycling Team De Rijke).

On the approach to the city for the finale the peloton accelerated as teammates of the Tour de Normandie 2015 leader, Dimitri Claeys (Verandas Willems) started to roll at the front along with Team Joker. The lead of the break started to melt quickly with 35 km to go.

With the peloton together hasing full gas, two riders held them off until 5k to go. The yellow jersey Dimitri Claeys then thought the best form of defense was attack and he lined out the peloton with splits starts to open up. It was too early though and the lined out group contested the sprint for the stage won by Vereecken.

As well as Doull in third, Tom Scully was 7th and overall British teams have riders in fourth (Scully, Madison Genesis) and ninth (Owain Doull, Team Wiggins).

Roger Hammond, Team Manager of Madison Genesis “That was a great ride by Mike, they really put the leaders under pressure. It’s such a pity the leaders got so much help chasing behind but more disappointing was the self-destruct attack upfront. Why the De Ryke rider thought he was better alone than with six when they were losing time anyway I will never work out! In the end it was a great team performance, with the others finishing off what Mike had started and pulling a few of those all-important seconds back.”
