Report & Results – Capernwray Road Races
(thanks Graham)

A tough day in North Lancashire saw wet and windy conditions for the THR Racing and Lancaster Cycling Club mens and womens Capernwray Road Races.

The womens race over 4 laps blew apart on the first lap with Amy Gornall, Aspire HSS Hire and Angela Hibbs, Team WattCycle escaping from the chasers to forge a substantial lead for most of the race. Amy was looking strong each time up the main climb and took the Queen of Sunny Bank prize, but could not hold the final sprint of Angela who took the win on the final climb to the finish.

Joanne Blakeley of Team 22 led home the first chasing group some 4 minutes after the two leaders. Almost the full field of women finished the race with plenty of smiles and grimaces on the final climb to the finish at the top of Sunny Bank.

WIN FOR IAN BIBBY
The mens race over seven laps started very fast with small groups coming across the top of Sunny Bank on the first ascent. A strong group came together by the third lap with representation from Peter Williams and George Atkins of One Pro Cycling, James Gullen and Jack Pullar of Velosure Starley Primal, Lee Baldwin of Champion System VCUK Racing Team and Ian Bibby of NFTO.

This group was joined by Matt Cronshaw of Madison Genesis and stayed clear of the chasing pack for the rest of the race. The conditions were taking their toll, with several riders suffering form the effects of the cold and withdrawing from the race, including Jack Pullar.

On the final lap, it was Williams forcing the pace over the top of the climb with a reduced leading pack in single file behind. An attacking last lap saw Williams, Cronshaw, Bibby and Gullen break free from the lead group and as the four came in sight of Sunny Bank for the last time, it was Cronshaw who was trying to gap the others.

Once on the final climb however, Cronshaw was distanced and Williams, Bibby and Gullen raced together until the last 300m when Bibby and Gullen left Williams behind. In a repeat of the womens race it was a close 2-up sprint but Bibby powered clear for the win. Williams had some consolation as the King of Sunny Bank with Gullen coming second.
