Team News – Madison Genesis
The opening race of the British Cycling Elite Road Series was at a new venue this year, a 37.3km circuit in Lancashire to be covered five times to give a total race distance of 186.7km. Adding to the challenge, the circuit included the three mile KoM climb of Rivington Road on the outskirts of Chorley which was to cause the riders several problems.
The sun was shining and the spectators came out in their droves to watch the riders roll out of the city centre start and finish area. With just five miles before the first climb of Rivington Road the attacks came thick and fast, however the bunch remained largely in-tact until the ascent. The speed at the front of the bunch on the climb caused plenty of damage behind with swathes of riders dropped. Over the top of the climb the first break of the day eventually established itself with Tom Stewart at the front for Madison Genesis. Unfortunately, with only one other rider for company the break was ultimately doomed on such an open and flowing circuit. After 50 miles they were reeled in by the large bunch.
At three laps to go the bunch split on the climb and 17 riders went clear with James McLaughlin, Liam Holohan and Mark McNally representing Madison Genesis. This group went on to form the winning move on the penultimate lap when 11 riders prised their way off the front, with all three Madison Genesis riders making the cut. On the last lap however, three others managed to break free on the climb and with a disjointed chase from the remnants of the break, they were able to stay away to the finish.
Roger Hammond, Team Manager:Â “It was a bit of a disappointing day in the end, initially we rode well putting ourselves in a strong position but we really didn’t capitalise that advantage to its fullest extent towards the end of the race. We’ve learned from the experience and are looking forward to the Tour of the Reservoir next weekend.”
