News – Women Masters at Risk

Women’s Masters British Road Championships, Saturday 30th of May, near Milton Keynes

In participation terms, the total Masters Championships (including men) are the biggest road racing event in the UK.

Lack of entries may result in the Women’s Championship being reduced to one combined race.

Race Director, Wayne Thomas reports that based on the responses and feedback from 2014 we have geared up to run two separate races – a 30-39 age group over 65 miles, and a 40 and upwards age group over 54 miles.

However, with only 23 and 25 entries respectively (48 in total vs 45 in 2014), this does not justify the costs associated with the two full support teams appropriate to a National Championship. And this despite the very positive fact that 29 entries (60%) are from riders who did not enter in 2014!

Accordingly, unfortunately, and disappointingly, unless entries make a rapid improvement, the two races will be combined. Races within races for each five year age group will of course still apply.

By contrast, in the men’s event, every category has a higher entry than 2014, with 321 entries to-date of which over 50% being from riders who did not enter in 2014.

A late surge in the final week will take entries over 400 – which in UK road racing terms would be huge.
