Report – Womens’ York Road Race
Eight seven riders lined up on the start line for this, the first edition of the new race organised by Welcome to Yorkshire and British Cycling. Bob Howden, President of British Cycling waved the flag to start the race and the front riders set a high pace from the start.
The wind played a factor in how the race, set over four laps of a technical 20km circuit, panned out with a strong front group rapidly putting distance between themselves and the chasers.
The first lap was completed at an average speed of 26mph and the first sprint points were taken by Manon Lloyd (Team USN), Katie Archibald (Pearl Izumi Sports Tours International) and Eileen Roe (Wiggle Honda), with Ciara Horne (Pearl Izumi Sports Tours International), Katie Archibald and Nicola Juniper (team Giordana-Triton) taking the second sprint points. The third sprint points were taken by Katie Archibald, Manon Lloyd and Charline Joiner.
Speaking to the media after the race, overall winner Louise Mahé said, “It was super fast from the off, with plenty of attacks but nothing stuck. It was quick, really quick. It was quite a mixed field but that’s the beauty of women’s racing, you can race against your heroesâ€.
With only 10 seconds separating the top 28 riders who sprinted for the line, the last lap proved a stunning finale for the crowds who had gathered earlier in the morning.
Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said “Today we’ve seen how spectacular women’s racing is and I am delighted that we had such a strong field. We will grow the Women’s Tour de Yorkshire year on year and I look forward to seeing female riders of this calibre back on Yorkshire roadsâ€.
Marc Etches, Race Director, said “Giving the riders the opportunity to race on this circuit in York, with the crowds and the atmosphere, was brilliant. Today was a really special race for the women and let’s hope we can build the race in the years to comeâ€.
Podium prizes were awarded by Denise Burton-Cole, retired World Champion and daughter of Yorkshire legendary rider Beryl Burton, with Kersten England, Chief Executive of City of York Council. Prizes included bouquets of locally grown flowers from From The Farm, and hampers Yorkshire produce provided by Drewton’s Farm Shop.
