Tour of the Gila- New Mexico

After being placed third and fifth in previous editions, Paul Simon Homes – Finchley RT rider Dermot Kealey has pulled off the win in the Masters Tour of the Gila, New Mexico, a five day stage race.

Kealey got to pull on the leaders jersey after ‘Stage1’ he managed to get into the race winning move and attacked over one of the many climbs and rode solo from 30km out to take the overall by almost two minutes.

In the following individual hilly time trial he extended his lead over the rest by a further 59 seconds to take his lead up to over two minutes, in the following two flat stages Kealey defended his jersey with relative ease just sitting in the bunch and finishing with the same time as the winner.

On the fifth and final stage ‘Queen Stage’ which include the tough ten kilometre climb up to ‘Pinos Altos’ Kealey finished in fifth, there was a bit of a scare for him though as there was a break that went away, at the base of the climb they had 2.15 over the chase group that he was in, but fortunately this group hunted down the leaders therefore reducing the time gap, so securing the jersey for Kealey by an impressive 5min 10s.

Kealey said about his win “ Finally I have got the win after some bad luck in previous years, all my 5am training sessions have paid off, I also received some valuable advice from Jonathan Schubert 24hour TT Champion and Andrew Hastings (RichardsonsTrek) as they knew the parcour they advised me to go for the lead on the first stage as it suited me and defend it, thats exactly what I did
