News – Hillingdon Grand Prix
Paceline RT is proud to promote the third round of the British Cycling National Women’s Elite Series in 2015, the Hillingdon Grand Prix. First run in 2009, the Hillingdon GP has
grown from a field of mostly local riders to attracting the country’s top elites, boasting as past winners two time World Junior Champion Lucy Garner and current Olympic Team
Pursuit Champion Dani King.
Paceline RT is taking over organiser duties from the very able but deservedly retired Stuart Benstead of BC Central Region, and the focus is on the women’s GP as it grows in size and stature with each promotion. Unique in its format and length, the GP promises to be a tough test of endurance and speed as riders attack, try to form breaks, and sprint for primes over two hours of racing around one of London’s best known closed circuits.
Last year’s race saw many efforts to split the bunch and send a group of riders away, but in the end the sprinters won the day as Amy Roberts from Wiggle Honda took the win. With still 2 weeks to go before the closing date we have seen a surge in entries and we hope to top last year’s field of 80 riders.
Supporting the GP we have Youth A/B races, a men’s 3rd and 4th category race, and new for this year a women’s 3rd and 4th category race for those who aren’t quite ready to step up to racing the GP itself. Each race will have the track to themselves a rarity in lower category women’s racing and along with cash prizes for both races, the women’s race is sponsored by Bella Velo of Surbiton who are donating numerous prizes.
We particularly encourage these women to stay on and enjoy the National Series atmosphere after their race is over, as it’s not every day that local heroes can race immediately before the country’s elite! Refreshments will be on offer at HQ and trackside with proper coffee, homemade cakes, and savouries on the menu.
Racing kicks off at 10am with the Youth races, followed by 3rd/4th category men at 10:45, 3rd/4th category women at 12:15, and the main event the Grand Prix from 2pm until approximately 4pm. Hillingdon Cycle Circuit is a one mile purpose built circuit situated in Minet Country Park in West London, just off the M25 and M4.
