Male and female riders competing in a major bike race in Shrewsbury this May will be awarded equal prize money, organisers have announced

News – Shrewsbury Grand Prix
The prize pot for top riders at the Shrewsbury Cycle Grand Prix stands at £4,000 with winners of the Pro Crit and Women’s Only races set to receive £750 each.
The large prize fund is thanks to Shropshire businesses Stan’s Cycles, Beaumont Lawrence, Pure Telecom, Copper Green Pooks, Hatchers Solicitors and Walnut Renovations, who are all sponsoring the Grand Prix on Sunday May 31.
The event, organised by the Paramount Cycle Club, is proving very popular with cyclists across the country, with the amateur race already full. Race organiser Ben Lawrence said the large prize fund was likely to attract more professional riders in the coming weeks and he hopes the prize fund will encourage more women to sign up. He said: “For both the Women’s Only race and Pro Crit, there is a prize fund of £2,000, with the winner of each set to receive £750.
“It’s very unusual in cycling for the women’s prize fund to match the mens but the Grand Prix is very much about boosting womens cycling. Women put in just as much time and effort into their training as men and so should be able to achieve the same level of prize money. We would really like to attract more women to the Grand Prix from across the country.”
“It is a great race around the streets of Shrewsbury. The course is fast paced, technical and challenging and in future years we want it to be one of the top women’s races in the country. We would love women in the West Midlands and further afield to come out to support the race. They just need a British Cycling Race Licence.â€
The course will run around part of the town centre with The Square being the hub of the event. The route will take riders from The Square along High Street, Shoplatch, St Johns Hill, Cross Hill, Swan Hill, College Hill, Princess Street, Milk Street and then back on to the High Street.
