Report & Results: Isle of Man’s Youth League

Apart from a short shower just before the event got underway, conditions remained dry for the 301 competitors who turned out at the NSC last Tuesday night for round four of Team RL360 Isle of Man’s youth cycling league.

Conor Davies produced the ride of the night in the under 16 racing bikes, attacking at half-distance and powering away to take the chequered flag nearly half a lap ahead of the chasing pack. Thomas Bostock pipped Will Draper in the bunch gallop for second place, with leading under 14 rider Tosh Teare a close fourth. Ben Christian edged out Adam Kelly for fifth and Eleanor Davies took the girl’s prize in seventh position. Harry Cain, Amelia Sharpe and Max Walker completed the top ten.

In the under 12 racing bikes Tyler Hannay outsprinted six breakaway companions to bag maximum points for the second week in succession. Tommy Skillicorn grabbed the runners-up spot ahead of Zac Walker, Matthew Cooil, Ralf Holden, Jonty Bregazzi and Matthew Black. Darcy Cain, Kiera Prentice and Emily Kinley were the top three girls in 11th, 12th and 13th respectively.

Owen Collins outgunned Ivan Sorby, Cian Howard and Drystan Sewell to score his maiden win in the under 10 racing bikes. Frank Kinnish was a safe fifth and Orry Lund beat leading girl Mairi Harrison in the race for sixth. Oliver Corkish, Tyler Annis and James Scott filled the remaining places on the top ten leader board.

At the start of the evening Norah Ellis rode to another clear win in the novices race. Joseph Nodwell was a solid second and Joel Prentice overcame Oliver Schofield in the rush for third. Abigail Cowell headed Liberty Delooze and Jessica Sherwin home for fifth, while Erin Morgan held off Lily-Faye Bell, Isla Dickaty and Isaac Stott in the tussle for eighth. Jack Monaghan overtook Darcy Killey on the finishing straight to round off the top twelve.

Brad Le Geyt forged ahead of the field to complete a hat-trick of victories in the born 2010 & later category. Round one winner Kylan Murphy was a lonely second and Daniel Minay won the fight for third ahead of Stanley Kinnish, Dylan Bullock, Archie Mulholland, Harrison Skillan and best girl Lula Kinnish. Kirk Michael’s Beth Christian kept Conor Madsen-Mygdal and Joshua Cross at bay for ninth, with Ffinlo Thomas heading the main bunch in for 12th.

Eddie Dillon had to shake off a strong challenge from Cameron Hounsell before taking the honours in the born 2009 class. Jake Jones stayed clear of chaser Abi Clayton to claim third and Thomas Pickavance got the better of Sean Crone and Matthew Hooper in the fight for fifth. Zach Jones pipped Jarno Davidson for eighth and Thomas Radcliffe maintained his position in front of the main pack to secure tenth.

In the born 2008 event Alec Sorby slipped away from fellow frontrunner Myles Le Geyt in the closing stages to gain his fourth win of the series. Freddie Griffin and Fearne Bregazzi escaped from a chasing group of five riders to pick up third and fourth, with T.J.Teare, George Kinnish and Joel Long trailling in for fifth, sixth and seventh. Oliver Cooper won the bunch gallop for eighth ahead of Edward Field and Charlotte Geldart.

Cian Howard had the edge on breakaway partner Orry Lund in the dash for the top slot in the born 2007 class. Florence Griffin got past Charlie Scarffe on the final lap to snatch third, while Rio Kelly and Jordan Carter came in separately to secure fifth and sixth. Jemma Quayle came through the field to beat James Kinrade, Ben Davies, Ed Coole and Harry Ellis in the scramble for seventh.

In the born 2006 category Owen Collins came out on top in a closely fought battle with Ivan Sorby and Drystan Sewell. Tom Caine held off the fast finishing Nicola Quaye for fourth and Samuel Devereau scored a safe sixth in front of Rebecca Cooil, Tom Darnill, Jack Christian and Lucy Field.

A delighted Tyler Annis outran Frank Kinnish to record his maiden success in the born 2005 three lapper. Mairi Harrison lost contact with the leading duo on the penultimate lap, but held onto third place with a clear advantage over Oliver Corkish in fourth spot. Chloe Dillon and Ella Griffin wrapped up the top six.

Finally, Tyler Hannay made an early attack in the born 2004 & earlier grouping and left everyone behind in his wheel tracks to fight over the minor placings. James Devereau and Shellan Leeming went off in pursuit but were unable to make any inroads into Hannay’s lead. Devereau salvaged second, while Leeming had to settle for fourth after been caught by Matthew Black on the line. Nathan Slack and Kyle Batty were fifth and sixth.
