Team News – Fusion RT’s Bedford 3 Day
Team Release
“This was a complete road race for Fusion RT Gearclub as the whole team as well as excellent individual performances, they rode as a team. The team performance on the last stage in the protection of Natalie’s six second lead was of the highest quality”.
Natalie says of it “I felt totally protected for the whole stage. Absolutely brilliant performance from everyone”.
So how did we get there …
Day One, the first Road Race. This was very active but as the course is essentially flat and all the riders fresh, all attacks were neutralised. So it came down to a bunch gallop with Bethany Taylor of Bonito Squadra Corse coming home first from Rebecca Nixon of Fusion RT by a bike length.
Day two, the Team Time Trial and once again Fusion RT Gearclub were piped into second place. This time by PMR@Toachim House/Kalas by 3 seconds. So the yellow jersey changed hands for the first time.
The afternoon road race was full of incidents with all the major players doing their best to mount attacks. Gillian Taylor of Fusion RT Gearclub set up a break with two other riders but crashed out and that was the end of her race.
The remains of the bunch hit the bottom of the hill up to the finish and a massive attack by Laura Massey of Squadra Donne Shutt VR with Charlotte Broughton Corley Cycles and Rebecca Nixon Fusion RT came in one two and three from the rest of the bunch by 6 seconds. This was enough to put Rebecca in yellow by three seconds.
The third and final day was to be a cliff hanger if there ever was one. The individual time trial was won by Natalie Grinczer Fusion RT by 7 sec from Ruth Somerford of PMR@Toachim House, Mathilde Mahilde Mathijsse of Bonito Squadra Corse and Laura Massey all same time. This put Natalie in yellow for the afternoon road race and the 5th and final event by 6 secs.
Well of course the other major players were not going to lie down and make a gift to Fusion and the attacks came fast and furious with The Army, Bonito, PMR and Laura Massey all making determined efforts to break the race up and and get away. Fusion worked extremely hard with all team members working showing total commitment to contain the race despite the efforts of the other teams.
So into the last corner with the finish at the top of the hill and it was Rebecca Nixon of Fusion RT Gearclub who attacked to win the stage by a single second from the chasing bunch with Natalie safely near the front of the bunch. No time gaps so first place on GC was hers.
Have no doubts this race was hotly contested with never more than a few seconds between the top 11 places and it took team work of the highest quality to achieve it.
Megan Barker apart from excellent work for the team won her private battle with Charlotte Broughton for the Junior prize.
