Report & Results – Mid Shropshire Wheelers Crits
Round 4 of the Mid Shropshire Wheelers circuit race series at the ever popular Shrewsbury Sports Village circuit was dominated by promoting club Junior and Youth riders much to the delight of the club coaches.
Numbers were slightly down despite better weather possibly due to a mass turnout at the West Midland Youth League event at Lichfield on Saturday but there was great racing none the less.
Shrewsbury Sixth Form student James Elmore crossing the finish line.
Ryan Oldfield, Redditch CC, Madelaine Gilet were solo winners in the under 8s, regular visitor Joshua Jackson took a solo victory in the under 10 boys and lacking any competition promoting clubs Rebecca “Rocket†Woodvine mixed it with the boys to take the under 10 girls win.
Ben Pierce of Mid Shropshire Wheelers has made a real step change in performance this season and was an early animator in the under 12s to take the win solo from clubmate Henri Bedford winning a thrilling sprint from a small chase group. Mid’s Rhiannon Tansley hung on tenaciously to the chase group that included Aimee Lane of Wyre Forest CRC but finally had to give best to the very impressive Lane who stayed with the boys until the end. One to watch!
Numbers were down in the under 14s due to a Club Cluster session at the Derby Velodrome being booked over the top of this established event. That said it was an attacking race and 4 boys came to the end with a great sprint from Hayden Norris, Lichfield City CC taking the win.
“With only 5 boys and no girls entered in the under 14s bringing in £25, a first prize of £15 and a circuit hire charge of £40 for the duration of that race, the club made a £30 loss. British Cycling is not doing themselves, their clubs or their organisers any favours. The club have invested in a £15,000 chip timing system with the help of a grant from Sport England and facilitated by British Cycling agreeing that this investment will increase participation.â€
Organiser Dave Mellor said, “I don’t think Sport England will ask for their money back but it doesn’t bode well for other forward thinking clubs asking Sport England for money if the National Governing isn’t working with the clubs to deliver a co-ordinated regional calendar that will get more youngsters and Women racing which is what we said would be one of the benefits of the grant.â€
Conversely it was a big turnout in the under 16s with a break of 7 forming, dropping down to 6 then 5, then 1 as Will Lewis, Wolverhampton Wheelers, going solo in his ever aggressive style only to be caught on the last lap and a fantastic shoulder to shoulder sprint with great bike handling on display with the verdict going to Energy Junior Teams Huw Owen. Team mate Gwenno Hughes was able to stay with the boys longer than the rest of the girls for a very impressive win and a great double banger for Energy!
A late Twitter call out for Women to support the Women only event provided at each Mid Shropshire Wheelers Sunday race day was successful with 18 riders taking to the line. Still more riders needed though and the BC calendar co-ordination surely needs attention to help organisers.
Early race activity from Shrewsbury’s Ellie Russell amongst others came to nought and a big bunch was given the bell with the Commissaires reminding riders to sprint straight. It was Giordana’s Annesley Park a regular at Shrewsbury who looked to have the win but roared on by Dad Colin, it was local favourite Youth A rider Ellie Russell who took the win.
After an 85 mile ride with the British Cycling Youth Academy on Saturday it was a classy performance to finish off the weekend from the Adcote Schoolgirl riding up in the senior race with dispensation from British Cycling coaches.
The final race of the day was a thriller with a break forming early only to be absorbed and somehow some of the breakaways persevering seemingly against the odds, as riders dropped back, riders went across then finally becoming 4 riders and the elastic finally snapping between break and bunch with promoting club rider, Junior James Elmore being the catalyst in every move. Pete Banham, Team Jewson, tried to go solo with 3 laps to go and in a classic counter, young Elmore went solo with 2 to go and the race was won as two of his breakaway companions looked at each and the other just held off a fast approaching bunch with “King of the Circuit†Kirk Vickers rueing the missed break taking 5th.
