News – Beaumont Trophy
EVENT PRESS RELEASE
Some of the world’s best cyclists will return to the North East to contest the 2015 Beaumont Trophy as part of the Virgin Money Cyclone Festival of Cycling, June 19 – 21. Five British UCI Continental teams are confirmed to compete in the race, including a newly announced professional squad assembled by Sir Bradley Wiggins.
Team WIGGINS will join Team Madison Genesis, Team Raleigh GAC, Team JLT Condor, NFTO and the newest British Continental team, ONE Pro Cycling, for the 63rd edition of the historic race. 2014 Elite Road Race Series winner, Yanto Barker, is expected to ride with Olympic gold medallist Steven Burke and British Road Race Champion Kristian House also potential starters. German UCI team, Bike Aid, is the first international team signed to compete with further teams to enter in the coming weeks.
The 2015 Beaumont Trophy is recognised by cycling’s world governing body, the Union Cycliste International (UCI), making it a European tour event for the second year running. A two-time champion of the Beaumont Trophy, Sir Bradley Wiggins will use the event to ready his team for the British Cycling National Road Championships staged the following week.
Virgin Money Cyclone Festival of Cycling Founder and Organiser, Peter Harrison, said of the current starting list: “The Beaumont Trophy is the culmination of a three-day weekend of festival events for cycling enthusiasts young and old. It’s a challenging course and one that plays an important role in setting up UCI teams for the busy summer racing season.
“We’re thrilled to attract riders of the calibre of Sir Bradley Wiggins’ team, as well as to put these riders on a stage for the North East to cheer on and support.â€
Team WIGGINS General Manager, Andrew McQuaid, added: “There are only six UCI Europe Tour races on home soil ahead of the Tour of Britain and it’s great that the Beaumont Trophy has retained its international standing as one of these events. We’re hoping for a strong turnout from people wanting to see the team in action in the North East.â€
Centred on the village of Stamfordham, the Beaumont Trophy takes in 117 miles of Northumberland country road with the gruelling climb of the Ryals often dividing the race. Each year, UK national teams are joined by international competitors, regional teams and club riders for the event.
Aspiring cyclists of all ages and abilities are encouraged to join a Virgin Money Cyclone Challenge ride to mark the path of the touring professionals. Held a day ahead of the Beaumont Trophy, the non-competitive Challenge rides trace much of the route of the elite cyclists in accessible 34, 64 and 106 mile events.
The Virgin Money Cyclone Festival of Cycling returns to Newcastle and Northumberland June 19 – 21. For full event information and to register yourself or a team, visit www.virginmoneycyclone.co.uk
