Report – ASDA StreetVelodrome Series
A large crowd came out to see the World’s only pop up track racing series take place right in the centre of their town.
The day started with the amateur rider qualification time trials in which local rider Ally Clancy topped the men’s time sheets and Jean Kent was fastest in the women’s competition. They both, along with the other qualifying amateurs went on to join the regular pro tour series riders in the main feature event.
The knock out pursuit racing competition started with the elimination races which reduced the field of 24 riders down to 12. These riders now met in a series of pro v am elimination races to select the final 4 male and 4 female riders who will contest for the medals.
In between the senior action on track was the all new StreetVelodrome Kids Series. Earlier in the day dozens of 3 to 14 year olds took part in special coaching and practise sessions. Those selected to race for the two teams competing in the Series, The Tigers and The Sharks, took part in three head to head pursuit races which really caught the crowds interest.
The biggest cheers of the day came for 3.5 year old Andy Hislop riding for the Sharks and 6 year old Esther Walker riding for the Tigers. After three rounds the Sharks won the competition by taking 2 wins to the Tigers 1. There were some amazing performances and displays of bike control in these junior racers. Names to look out for in the future are Jayden Randall 12 years old (Sharks) and Finn McHenry 12 years old (Tigers). Team Sharks will take their points lead into round 2 in Stevenage on 14th June.
The senior finals did not disappoint either. All day the build up of excitement centred around the clashes between 2014 Series champ Dave Johnson riding for Team Quella and Italian BMX star for Team ProCook Mario Presi. And in the women’s competition Team Cycleguard’s Jess Stone was showing why she is a favourite for the 2015 title in her dominant performances ahead of her clash with 2014 champ Anna Glowinski riding for Team Quella.
In the final gold / silver medal races Dave Johnson just managed to beat Mario Presi by 0.22 seconds to claim gold for Team Quella. Team Cycleguard’s Jack Ravenscroft claimed bronze ahead of local amateur rider Ally Clancy. Whilst Jess caused an upset by catching Anna before the finish line to secure Team Cycleguard’s first gold medal. Local guest team rider Sarah Bradford riding for the Johnstone Jets claimed bronze ahead of local amateur Taylor Blair.
As the tour left Paisley the team medal table is lead by Team Quella with 1 gold, 1 silver, ahead of Team Cycleguard with 1 gold, 1 bronze and Team ProCook’s silver medal. It could all change in round 2 in Stevenage on 14th June. Go to www.streetvelodrome.co.uk for more news on the ASDA StreetVelodrome Series.
