Report  – Mid Shropshire Wheelers Circuit Race 5

Sun comes out at Shrewsbury!

A sunny day no doubt encouraged a massive turnout for the Mid Shropshire Wheelers Circuit Race #5 which incorporated Round 5 of the British Cycling West Midlands Youth Series to the ever popular Shrewsbury Sports Village Circuit.

A circuit maximum of 50 riders took to the line in the combined under 8s and under 10s with honours split between Redditch, Lichfield and Halesowen clubs.

The under 12s was another monster field with local Mid Shropshire Wheeler Ben Pierce taking his first win in the West Mids series although beaten to the overall win by Welsh visitor Josh Tarling with Glasgow visitor Imani Pereira-James putting on a masterclass for the girls win.

National Champion Lewis Askey almost put back to back wins together. Firstly winning the under 14 boys race and then riding up in the under 16s, narrowly losing to Lichfield club mate Charlie Cox. Hollie Owens took the under 14 girls title with Cardiff’s Sophie Williams getting the better of Wolverhampton’s Gabby Homer.

The Women’s race was another big field for the Shrewsbury Circuit and to the delight of the spectators it was Mid Shropshire Wheelers National Junior Champion Hetty Niblett who took the mid race sprint prize and then demonstrated a great turn of speed to take the bunch gallop.

In the Senior Men’s race the riders obviously hadn’t taken notice of Newport’s Nova Raider Luke Pollard’s performance two weeks ago. In similar vain Pollard was a constant animator until he finally broke free to ride home alone for a great victory. Ex Pro Phil Wilkins just got the better of local rider Chris Horsfield, thankfully recovered from his fall at the Shrewsbury Grand Prix.
