Friday Night Track League Round 19/06/2015
Halesowen Cycling club’s Friday night track league commenced this week following a two month period of closure’s due to track refurbishment. As a result of the delay, fresh-legged riders were eager to impress and turn the hard training over the past couple of months in to race results. The sunshine and an aggressive evening of racing meant that the first round lived up to the showcase spectacle hinged upon it, leaving promises of much more dramatic races to be seen over the coming summer months.

And it was straight down to the business end for Jacob Tipper of Neon Velo Cycling team in the opening 8 lap scratch race, taking the sprint by two bike lengths to his closest rival Bradley Simkin of Halesowen. However, the same feats were not to be emulated in the “longest lap”; a sprinters event where riders are required to track stand until the commissar blows the whistle. Despite Tipper and Dighton being the most apt in this exercise, the pair were left in their tracks by Simkin and Walker who were already moving before the whistle was blown. However, Tipper was only to be defeated once; taking wins in the “unknown distance” and the iconic 20 lap scratch race from a three man breakaway shortly after to cement his dominance over the A category on the night.

A dominant display was absent in the B category and as a result the racing was a lot more open ended, with the main protagonists being Nicholas Clayton (private member) and Harvey Jackson (Halesowen A and CC). It was Clayton who took the honours in the 8 lap scratch race, after positioning himself well to win the sprint from a fragmented bunch. The win and out saw Jackson take the lap the fastest ahead of vet Matt Harris. But Clayton was to rectify his fourth place overall in the 25 lap scratch race; holding his own with the A category riders to lap the rest of the B category field and take victory.

The youth races were also fiercely contested between under 16 rider Massimo D’Vito and an assortment of Under 14 riders snapping at his heels. It seemed to be D’Vito who had the edge on the night. He started with victory in the 10 lap scratch race, comfortably ahead of under 12 Ryan Brookes who impressed to take second ahead of riders 3 years older than him. Liam Allen and Willam Gorner edged D’Vito in to second place in the kilo and the devil respectively. This consistent performance means that D’Vito now leads the youth category going in to round two, with Allen seven points in arrears.
