Report: 1st Chard Wheelers Youth Stage Race

Nathan Huynh, Cotswold Veldrijden made the trip from Swindon to South Somerset worthwhile when he won 1st Chard Wheelers’ inaugural Youth Stage Race, with over 100 young riders taking part in the event on Saturday.

After winning the opening time trial, a third in the points race and second in the final stage road race secured the overall win.
Jamie Plummer T1Diabetes won the points race with an attacking ride that saw the Devon rider off the front for long periods, while Evan Rouse, North Devon Wheelers, prized himself off the front of a rapid bunch to win the road race, securing himself third place overall, while second place on the closing stage gave Josh Price, Ride 24/7, second in the general classification.

In the girls races Sophie Williams, Cardiff JIF put on an assured performance to win overall with two wins and a second. Second overall was Team Welwyn visitor Josie Griffin who also won the under 14 title, while Georgia Bailey , Newport Olympic finished third.

Evie Lane, Certini won the opening time trial to prevent Sophie taking a clean sweep of all the stages. Freya Thatcher, Newport Velo and Jess Morrish, North Devon Wheelers rounded out the under 14 girls podium.

In the boys under 14s, 1st Chard Wheelers’ Rowan Ellis won overall with wins in the time trial and points, then placing second to Harry Birchill in the closing road stage to win from the Certini rider. Club mate Evan Richards finished third overall to put two riders on the podium for the promoting club.
