Tour de France – Stage 5

REPORT STAGE  1 | REPORT STAGE  2 | REPORT STAGE 3 | REPORT STAGE  4 |

A sprint stage they said it was and so it panned out with the bunch kick into Amiens seeing the worlds fastest men on two wheels go elbow to elbow for the biggest prize in cycling, a stage of the Tour de France.

After a defeat earlier in the race many people’s favourite was Britain’s Mark Cavendish but he was denied yet again by Andre Greipel who snatched his second win of this Tour from a missle finish by Peter Sagan with Cav in third. Tony Martin, retained the yellow jersey so convincingly conquered in Cambrai.

In rain and wind, the roads in many places were like riding on ice and France’s Nacer Bouhanni, who was looking forward to this long stretch along the battlefield of WWI, crashed after 11 km and was forced out of the race.

No respite
The stage, seen as a possible break after four hectic days, was just as stressful and tough on tired bodies because of rainy, windy conditions in the region. Nicolas Edet had been at the start of the first move, also involving Pierre-Luc Perichon (BSE), who carried on on his own and remained in the front for 90 kilometers.

On slippery roads, crashes were many and involved riders of the calibre of green jersey holder Andre Greipel, French sprinter Bryan Coquard, Belgum’s Greg Van Avermaet and Trek Factory leader Bauke Mollema of the Netherlands. All escaped unhurt and his slip-up did not affect Greipel, who won the bunch sprint behind Perichon in Rancourt (km 89.5) to add 17 points to his green jersey tally.

After the sprint, the bunch regrouped and splits took place when Team SKY, BMC and Tinkoff-Saxo set the tempo shortly before a sharp turn at kilometer 110. Richie Porte, Rafal Majka Thomas Voeckler or Peter Kennaugh were among the riders dropped.

The bunch seemed decided to wait for a mass sprint when, 25 km from the line, another major crash involved some 30 riders, among them Frenchmen Thibaut Pinot and Jean-Christophe Peraud, both on the Tour podium last year. They made it back in the bunch as the sprinters trains organized.

John Degenkolb’s Giant Aplecin and the royal guard of Mark Cavendish – Michal Kwiatkowski and Tony Martin – led their sprinters out but Greipel, far behind at 300 metres, surged forward into the headwind for an emphatic win.

It was chaotic, headwind up hill sprint with different trains going from all over the road and the favourite for the sprint, Mark Cavendish lost the wheel of his leadout man, Mark Renshaw who was the front waiting, waiting for his teammate to appear on his wheel.

Cavendish didn’t however and with Kristoff going down the right and Cavendish in the centre, Greipel who was behind them in ther wheels, had to go the long way round, switching to the left of the road before diving for the centre of the road on the finish line to hold off a bullet like finish from Peter Sagan who was second with Cav third.

Andre Greipel:

André Greipel: “With 350 metres to go I didn’t look so good, I was a bit boxed in. But when I got more space, I gave all I got. It was a tough finish, the kilometre before the last five hundred metres wasn’t completely flat and there was a headwind. I think it was a pure sprint. There was no lead-out for any of us, it was man to man. Sagan moved up quickly at the left, I hadn’t seen him, but it’s the result at the finish line that counts.”

“I could count on a strong Marcel Sieberg again, who perfectly led me to the front; he is in the shape of his life. Also Tony Gallopin and Lars Bak did more than just their job. Because of the injuries of Adam and Greg we had to change our strategy, but the team was strong as always. As a sprinter it’s a luxury to have such a dedicated team.”

“Because of my result at the intermediate sprint and the stage win I took important points for the green jersey classification. It’s the first time I’m in this situation, but on the moments that I can I will fight for the points. We always said that green could only be an option after a stage win. Tomorrow the wind will make it another nervous stage and the finish in Le Havre is probably too hard for sprinters. But I won’t worry about that until tomorrow!”

Peter Sagan (2nd) “It was good. I was too far back in the last 200 metres, like in 10th position. In these conditions, I’m happy to finish second. And it was good to because we managed to take Alberto unhurt to the finish line in spite of the rain, the wind and the crashes. That’s the most important thing.”

Tony Martin: “To be honest I remained concentrated on the race. With the rain, the wind and the crashes I had no time to celebrate or enjoy the yellow jersey. It might be the same again tomorrow. Hopefully will come a stage when the race calms down a little bit,” he said. “My ambition now is to keep the jersey as long as possible. I’m convinced that I can normally keep it until the first rest day. Another goal is to be able to help Mark (Cavendish) win a stage,” he said.

Ian Stannard: “There was absolutely everything out there today. It rained on and off, which made the roads slippery, and it was also windy. That made for a stressful day and it was actually more tiring out there than on a crosswind stage. We’re taking things day by day at the moment, gaining what we can and limiting our losses, and we’re happy it’s gone to plan so far.”

Luke Rowe: “The first week was always billed as being like a classic each day, and it’s lived up to expectations. Every day has been super nervous and there’s been so many crashes. I didn’t witness any today as we were right at the front. That’s a stressful way to ride – and it consumes a lot of energy – but it’s the safest way, so that’s what we’ve been doing.”

“I’m certainly feeling it in my legs, but when you drop back and see guys ripped to bits with holes in their shorts, you’re glad you did what you did. The atmosphere in camp is really good right now. If you’d have told us we’d be in this position at the start of the Tour, we’d have snapped your hand off. We couldn’t ask to be in a better situation. Froomey’s flying – he’s proved that already and will do so again in the mountains – and the morale’s high.”

Alexander Kristoff. “I lost my entire lead-out in a crash with 25 km to go so I was alone at the finish and that’s always hard. I actually put myself in too good of a position too early in the front so I tried to just stay steady there and not sprint but it was a little bit uphill and I was just too long in the wind for a better result”.

“My legs feel good but the wind was terrible out there today and it was very slippery from the rain. I lost Luca, Marco and Jacopo just before the final. I was near the crash too but I didn’t brake so I managed to stay away. I will try of course again tomorrow but I think today would have been a better opportunity for me”.
