In a drama filled sprint up the climb into Le Havre, Zdenek Stybar was the fastest to the line to win stage 6 of the Tour de France whilst his teammates Tony Martin crashed wearing yellow. Martin still leads the race but there are doubts over whether he is fit to continue and that will ne much awaited news by fans.

Meanwhile, his teammate Stybar gave his team their second stage win and in a first for the tour, Teklehaimanot from Africa, pulled on the KoM jersey after winning all three KoM sprints during the stage.

StybarWins

Zdenek Stybar: “I have mixed feelings after winning this stage because Tony Martin crashed. When I caught up with him at the award ceremony, he only congratulated me and told me to enjoy the moment but he didn’t say how much he was injured”.

“It’s an amazing feeling to win a stage at the Tour de France, probably on the same level as my first victory at the cyclo-cross world championship in Tabor. I’ve had a hard time changing from cyclo-cross to road cycling. I got some results with winning the Strade Bianche and the Eneco Tour overall. Last year I’ve had some bad luck too with two crashes at the Eneco Tour and in cyclo-cross, so I’m extremely happy to have had the green light from my team to try and win today as I don’t get this kind of opportunity often in a year”.

“The last ten kilometers were kind of crazy. I received great info from the team car but to make it real wasn’t easy. Together as a team, we did well in the last downhill. I was thinking of taking Mark Cavendish to the front but he was in difficulty. I was in the wheels of Kristoff, Sagan and Van Avermaet, but they were in trouble too. So I just tried all or nothing. I went for it and the outcome was really great”.

KoM

The Race
Abbeville in Picardy was the start of a stage for the second time in the history of the Tour on a stage of 191 kilometres to Le Havre.

Pre stage, Europcar’s directeur sportif Andy Flickinger warned that his sprinter Bryan Coquard had targeted the stage and the Frenchman finished in xxx place

The other big favourites going into the stage were Peter Sagan and John Degenkolb. The big losers before a pedal had turned however were Orica GreenEdge who have had a wretched race and a lost number of riders expected to do well on the stage, Simon Gerrans and Michael Albasini whilst their Michael Matthews was still racing but in a lot pain.

One of today’s hot favourites John Degenkolb (Giant-Alpecin) spoke to letour.com prior to the start saying “The team is motivated to fight for today’s stage victory”, he said. “The finale suits me quite well. All day is really hard, it’s always up and down and we’re going to spend the whole day on the coast. It will make the whole stage very hard”.

The stage would give the riders with an eye on the polka dot jersey and chance to take it off the shoulders of Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) with there being three KoMs although all only 4th category climbs so only a few points on offer.

Stage6Break

Luis Angel Maté (Cofidis) was the first attacker of the day but no-one wanted him to go and he was dragged back but it wasn’t long before the day’s break went. After only five kilometres had passed under their wheels, three riders attacked; Perrig Quémeneur (Europcar), who initiated the breakaway, Kenneth Van Bilsen (Cofidis) and Daniel Teklehaimanot (MTN-Qhubeka).

Perrig Quémeneur (Europcar) was already leading the classification for the most kilometres in a break and the peloton were happy for the lead of the break to go out to ten minutes and more. “When I’m at the front, there are few chances for the breakaway to succeed” said the Europcar rider. “It’s my job to attack, it pleases me, it makes the team happy. We have to show what we can do because our sponsor stops at the end of the year”.

Lotto Soudal were soon on the front raising the tempo whilst at the first KoM, Daniel Teklehaimanot (MTN) took the single point on the Côte de Dieppe.

The African rider Teklehaimanot scored his second King of the Mountain point atop the Côte de Pourville-sur-Mer putting him on the same points as Joaquim Rodriguez back in the peloton. Meanwhile, the race leader Tony Martin had a little set back with a flat tyre but had his world champion teammate Michal Kwiatkowski help him back to the peloton cruising along.

The rider out front collecting KoM points, Daniel Teklehaimanot, won the King of the Mountain competition at the Critérium du Dauphiné last month, saying after “When I was young and watching the Tour de France, I was always more excited by the fight for the polka dot jersey than the yellow” Now there are no doubt young riders watching him and thinking similar thoughts.

At the intermediate sprint at Saint-Léonard (145km), Quémeneur took maximum points with John Degenkolb showing a glimpse of the form he has for these sort of sprints, beating another favourite for the stage, Coquard with Greipel 6th in the Green jersey.

The gap to the break had been closed down to less than minute but after the sprint, the teams were happy for it to go out again, and it was soon over two minutes and climbing. The final KoM went to Teklehaimanot.

With the mid race competitions done and dusted, it was time to settle the big one, the stage win and with 25k to go, the break lifted the pace as the peloton were now chasing them down at speed.Whilst the three at the front were doing quite long turns, it was a touch of the Tour Series in the peloton where the teams would line up across the road with each rider behind their teammate.

pelotonstage6

Bad luck for Lars Boom who punctured with 18k to go but the peloton was still cruising and he came back with some help from the cars. The ten mile to go mark came and went with the three leaders still clear but with 11 k to go an van Bilsen from Cofidis attacked as the gap was down to only 30 seconds.

It was a very technical run in with the roads twisting left and right and it suited the lone leader ahead of the peloton led by BMC which was now in a long line. The speed was now over 60k an hour and the faces grimacing showed just how frantic the pace was.

With 3k to go, Quickstep came to the front, as did Giant Alpecin as they caught can van Belsin who had been leading the race for 185 kilometres. Riders by now were flat stick for as long as they could before peeling off.

Cofidis then hit the front with Giant Alpecin as they started climbing with still over a k to go and just as they passed under the red kite,Tony Martin bounced off a rider into another and the yellow jersey was the ground clutching his shoulder.

Martin

As he did so, out front, his teammate Stybar had opened up a gap and held off the sprinters with Sagan getting second for the second day in a row. Yet more drama had hit the Tour de France and it was now a waiting game to see what the ramifications were going to be.

Whilst Martin was taken away in an ambulance, saying he’d touched the wheel of a Europcar rider and fallen into a Giant Alpecin rider who fell into Nibali who fell against Froome without causing him to fall. Later, on twitter, Martin tweeted “Collarbone is broken. We will discuss further steps.”

Tony Martin “I was extremely unlucky. I can’t really remember what happened. I touched the wheel of the rider ahead of me. It’s the Tour, luck and bad luck are very close together. It’s often the way accidents happen. You’re not going that fast and then you fall over each other with all your weight,” he said. It was later confirmed to be a broken collarbone and he will not start stage 7.

Peter Sagan: “Today I demonstrated that I have good legs, but this is the race and today everybody expected me to make a move. You have to stay cool and sometimes things don’t turn out exactly how you want it to and sometimes they do. I didn’t notice the crash, but apparently it happened just behind me. Stybar attacked on the climb and the group didn’t have the legs”.

“I said to the other riders that I wasn’t going to pull because they were all looking at me. If I had gone to the front to pull, I wouldn’t win the sprint. I’m still happy with the second place because it’s still some points for the jersey as Greipel wasn’t there. I won in the group, but the tactical situation made it very difficult, it’s hard to win”.

“My strategy was to be at the front on the final climb and wait for the sprint, but there were nobody to close the gap to Stybar. I won the green jersey for three years in a row and it would be nice to do that again, but it will be difficult for sure”, says Peter Sagan.

Chris Froome: “I took a knock on my knee bone and there was a little bit of blood there, but nothing more than that, I’m absolutely fine. I had to wait on the roadside as my rear wheel was buckled and I couldn’t ride on. Until the finish, today’s stage was definitely the most straightforward we’ve had so far. We had good weather, no crazy winds, and the pace of the racing was a little more relaxed. For me, it was about staying out of trouble and the guys did a good job in keeping me towards the front of the bunch.”

“As I’ve said before, I’m really happy with how things have gone up to this point and couldn’t have asked for any better. Hopefully we can keep that.”

Vincenzo Nibali “The teams always want to be at the front. It’s difficult to be well positioned. I crashed 400 metres from the line. I don’t quite understand how we found ourselves in such a mess. I don’t understand,” he said. The Astana team leader added he did not suffer any major bruise personally. “Personally, I’m OK. I only slightly hurt my leg and shoulder. It’s always a problem to crash. I really don’t know what happened. I know it went from left to right and I fell over Froome, who was on my right. I think Barguil is the one who felle over me. I don’t know for sure.”

John Degenkolb: “We were doing a good job today with a strong effort to the front in the final kilometre as we positioned next to Ettix – Quick Step to start the sprint. Then the crash happened and the sprint was disorganized. I was unable to follow Stybar at the moment he attacked. We’ve had our chances this Tour but so far without a victory. It’s not what we’ve hoped for, but that is part of racing and we have to accept that. We will continue chasing our goal of a stage win.”

Warren Barguil added: “I was in position to help John [Degenkolb] on the uphill finish as I was on Stybar’s wheel before the crash. Really too bad I crashed and wasn’t there for him. Luckily I am ok and we have to move on.”

Quintana crashes too: The crash between race leader Tony Martin (EQS) and Frenchman Coquard (EUC) caused a chain reaction which took down several GC contenders, including Nairo Quintana. “I was like three places behind Tony Martin and the crash that took him down also affected me. It’s a superficial wound; now that I’m still with all the ‘heat’ of the stage on me, I don’t feel any pain – I just hope it’s really nothing and feel my elbow OK tomorrow morning. People at home can feel calm about this.”

André Greipel: “Before the race, we knew it would be a hard finale but eight or nine kilometres before the end, we made a big mistake. We lost position at a roundabout and lost energy to get back on. For us, the sprint was already finished before it started. It’s a shame also for Tony Gallopin who could have done well today. It wasn’t possible for me to get over the climb but I hope to be a winner again tomorrow”.
