Mark Cavendish has won stage 7 to make Tour de France stage win number 26 whilst Chris Froome is now the race leader and in Yellow. This stage had sprint written all over it and after a five man break had been reeled in, the sprint teams took control at the head of the peloton, reeling off the kilometres in under a minute as the speed went through the roof.
Giant Alpecin were the dominant team as the lead out hit 4k to go whilst behind, Cavendish had lost a teammate as Vermote had a mechanical and didn’t rejoin the peloton, a feat in itself, until 4k to go. Then FDJ came to the front for Demare and the third kilometre was covered in only 51 seconds such was the speed of the race now.
Greipel’s Lotto team took him to the front and with 800 to go the man in the green jersey was third wheel and on a difficult finish, uphill and with the finish line around a bend out of sight, Greipel took it up, opening up the group for Cavendish to come through the gap between Greipel and Kristoff’s leadout man. With clear air ahead of him, Cav made no mistake this time and took the victory from Greipel and Peter Sagan, yet again in the top three.
Mark Cavendish:Â In the last two sprints, my team had done good. But I was too anxious and I went too early. One hesitation is enough for one or two riders to pass and the sprint to over. Today it was about kind of not being impatient anymore but I almost left it too long. I had seen that Alexander Kristoff had two lead out men”. Normally he goes early. I waited for him to go and I was almost too late”.
“I had to avoid Guarnieri and I almost panicked. If André Greipel had pushed me towards the barriers, I would have lost but he’s a gentleman. He sprinted straight. I had the same power the other days but it was a question of timing to make it a victory this time.”
“What happened to Tony Martin yesterday is a very sad way to lose the yellow jersey. Losing him is a big loss for us. On and off the bike, he’s a great guy. It’s like we started the Tour de France with twelve guys and we’re left with eight. I’m glad Tony’s operation went well. I wanted to win for him today. I would have loved him to be here to celebrate with us. I dedicate the victory to him”.
“Every of my 26 wins are special. One stage victory make a rider’s career, so to come here and win every year is great. It’s been a while since I last won: two years. It’s nice to come back as a winner in the presence of my wife and my daughter.”
I don’t know how many other opportunities there’ll be for a bunch sprint before Paris. Maybe in Valence, maybe in Rodez but the finish seems to be hard and it’ll be against Peter Sagan who will probably win the green jersey again this year. I’d like to stay with Etixx-Quick Step next year. I’ve grown up with this team. Belgians love cycling. I do too. It’s great to share the passion with people who feel the same”.
THE RACE
Stage 7 from Livarot to Fougères sees the peloton visit rural France the day after riding along the coast of the English Channel. Of all the stages, this one was more suited to a bunch kick than any except for Paris and the pressure was on Mark Cavendish. Listening to Robbie McEwen talk about the sprints so far, it seems that the pressure of being in contract year has been telling on Mark and this stage could be his saviour.
There were though many more hungry for the win, Peter Sagan, Alexander Kristoff, Bryan Coquard and Arnaud Démare to name but a few. The stage was a long one again, 190k, and it started without its Yellow jersey, Tony Martin as he was having surgery at 6am that morning and then flown home on private jet to a more local hospital.
It wasn’t a great start to the day for Alberto Contador who had a fall in the neutralised section as did Robert Gesink. From the time the flag was pulled into the car, the race was on and five riders escaped.
They were Kristjian Durasek (Lampre-Merida), Luis Angel Maté (Cofidis), Anthony Delaplace and Brice Feillu (Bretagne-Séché Environnement) and Daniel Teklehaimanot (MTN) the KoM leader.
At the first KoM, it was no surprise to see Teklehaimanot get the point on offer to add to those he has from the day before that saw him become the first African in a classifications leader’s jersey.
Chris Froome spoke to letour.com before the stage saying “Out of respect for Tony I would never have worn it in any case. That’s not the way to get the yellow jersey due to someone else’s misfortunes but Tony finished yesterday”.
“I was second on the GC so there was no way to wear it. It’s never a burden especially on a stage like today, it’s definitely a stage for the sprinters so the pressure is on the sprinters teams to control the race and get to the front.”
The first real action of the day was when the peloton came to sprint for the remaining Green jersey points on offer at the first intermediate sprint at Argentan (km 65.5) and John Degenkolb again showed his speed by winning that from Sagan, Greipel and Cavendish.
The next time these guys would sprint would be the end and Greipel said prior to the stage “It’s a tricky finale today and it’s not necessarily going to be easy. It might be a disadvantage for Cavendish to lose Martin. In any case I’ll try to go for the hat-trick.â€
The gap to the leaders came down early to under a minute with still 50k to go before they started to attack each to try and stay away for as long as possible before the inevitable and they were caught with 15km to go but two riders refuse to be reeled in. Luis Maté and Brice Feillu tried to stay away while Durasek and Delaplace went back to the peloton. Mate and Feillu though did not last much longer and soon it was the build up to the finale and the bunch kick which saw Cavendish, like Martin before him, finally get the stage he has been so close to getting.
Andre Greipel: “It seems like sprint finishes are more and more tricky with more and more riders trying to take part. My team did a good job bringing me to the front with 2km to go. In the final sprint, the road was going up and I was dying a bit, that’s why I didn’t win. The next bunch sprint will be in Paris but by then I’ll have other duties like supporting Tony Gallopin and going for some intermediate sprints”.
Patrick Lefevere: Mark Cavendish’s and Etixx Quick Step’s manager Patrick Lefevere was delighted after his team’s third stage victory on this Tour and in spite of Tony Martin’s withdrawal with the yellow jersey on after his crash in Le Havre. “Last night it was a mixture of happiness and pain. Today, it’s only happiness. It’s in no way a revenge”.
“Only the media talked about revenge. Mark never had a revenge to take. He was always there. And we always knew we would be around him to support him until Paris,” he said. And the Belgian manager added that this record 26th victory by the Manx sprinter on the Tour, the first in two years, was also way to react to criticism after the Zealand finish, when Cavendish stopped his effort, handing Fabian Cancellara the yellow jersey by one second at the expense of Martin. “For Mark, it’s also a relief because he had been cross by what happened in Zealand and the criticism he received,” he said.
Chris Froome: “It’s a huge privilege to be back in the yellow jersey again,” said Froome after the stage. “Unfortunately these aren’t the circumstances under which I wanted to get the yellow jersey, given that Tony Martin crashed out of the race the way he did yesterday. But I am happy to be back in yellow and there’s a lot of bike racing still to go from here. We’re just looking to get through these next few days into the team time trial as best we can and then we’ll re-evaluate from there”.
“It’s basically a day by day process – evaluating how everyone’s feeling and the stage that is coming up. What other motivations are out there and what other teams are going to be riding – for a sprint finish for example. On a stage like today it wasn’t really the burden of a GC team to do all the work on the front. There are a lot of factors that come into it. But I’m confident with the team I’ve got around me. They’ve done a fantastic job so far.”
“Today was actually a much needed, much more relaxed stage for everyone in the peloton. It seemed to be a lot more calm. We didn’t have cross-winds today and the weather was good. It was just a good day on the bike and I think everyone’s happy to get through safely.”
Daniel Teklehaimanot “I had to score one point, so I went away again. It was good to show something after I received the polka dot jersey yesterday. I was very happy that I achieved that goal. Last night I received a big support from my country. Now I want to reach the mountains with this jersey”.
Sean Yates: Tinkoff-Saxo team director Sean Yates insisted that Peter Sagan, who collects podium places on this Tour de France and is now only 12 points behind Andre Greipel in the fight for his 4th successive green jersey, was not frustrated by the lack of victories. “Peter is happy right now. He has pretty good results and the green jersey is within reach. You don’t have to be pure sprinter to win the green jersey. Sean Kelly won it twice in his time. To win it, you must also be able to go for points in harder stages. Peter has got the speed, but he’s not a sprinter,” he said.
Peter Sagan: “Everybody wants to be at the front. I was on André Greipel’s wheel. After I started, Mark was very fast today. I got third, it’s OK. I don’t know how difficult tomorrow’s finish is but it’ll be very hard for me to take the yellow jersey. I’m not a climber like Froome. It’s impossible for me to drop him on a climb and the time bonus might not be enough. But I can try. With my karma, I don’t know what I can hope for, I keep finishing second and third. But I’m doing well. The most important is to not crash. I have to keep being the closest possible to Greipel till the mountain stages”.
Nairo Quintana: “It was another one of those ‘dangerous’ stages for riders like me, but we got through the day pretty well, without any big problems. All was easy to handle. They didn’t put stitches on my elbow at the end, I only wear these bandages, but it’s true that it hurts a bit, though it doesn’t compromise my performance. I should keep recovering day by day.”
Alejandro Valverde: “It was a more calm day; in general, a normal stage for all of us. A break going away early, 50km full of stress – which is inevitable in this race… I’d say it went pretty much well. I’m still a bit sore, my knee hurts a bit, but I hope it’ll be completely fine in a couple of days”.
John Degenkolb “I was in the front at the final kilometer and we were in good position to start the sprint. Unfortunately I lost some meters at the roundabout and could not get it back in the sprint. The positioning is key and has to be perfect if I want to make a good go for the win at the Tour. I am good enough to win, as I have been close already a few times. That last piece of the puzzle is still missing for now.â€
Alexander Kristoff: “We were in the lead and I was in the best position, but when Greipel started his sprint I told Jacopo to move out but I was a little bit boxed in. When my lead-out had hit the corner I wanted to go on the inside, but Griepel came through too fast and I was blocked in. We did it as we’d planned, but it didn’t really work out as I was still stuck on the side. These stages have been difficult, especially with the final corners, but it’s the same for everyone. There won’t be so many other stages for the sprinters, maybe nothing more until the Champs Élysées in Paris”.
TeJay van Garderen:Â “There were a lot of narrow roads out there, but the wind and the weather was not so bad. In the last 50 kilometers or so, on some of those narrow roads, we started feeling a little bit of the nerves. But compared to the other days, today was pretty tranquil.”
