Joaquim Rodriguez climbs to a solo stage victory whilst Chris Froome withstands multiple attacks to stay in yellow in a big day in the Pyrenees
Tour de France – Stage 12
Joaquim (Purito) Rodriguez (Katusha) claimed his second stage win at the 102nd Tour de France after the Mur de Huy as he soloed to victory with 7.5km to go in the ascent to Plateau de Beille.
Joaquim Rodriguez: “After the first two Pyrenean stages, my morale was pretty low. The only way to make it today was to break away. I always said I was coming to the Tour for GC but since I’m out of contention, I focus on stage wins. I’ve had a hungerflat at La Pierre-Saint-Martin. It hit me badly. I was strenghtless. Yesterday, I crashed in the neutral zone and my hip was hurting.”
“I like this climb to Plateau de Beille. I live about fifty kilometers away. I’ve come here a thousand times and I’ve dreamt of winning here a thousand times. Last time I was here training with Alberto Losada, I had a flat tyre but I didn’t bring a spare one so I called my wife, she came to pick us up and we rode here again the day after. Today I’ve seen many acquaintances on the road side, people who came here to cheer on me. I wouldn’t say the last kilometers were easy but I managed to savour my victory. Everyone wanted to win here and it was even harder due to the weather conditions.”
“It means a lot to me to have won two stages at the Tour this year. I have never won a Grand Tour but it doesn’t mean that I don’t deserve it. I just haven’t had the luck that is the trademark of the big champions.”
Froome in control
The yellow jersey group meanwhile crossed the line with a deficit of almost seven minutes and despite attacks by his rivals, Chris Froome (Team Sky) and his team kept the race under control and retained the lead in the overall ranking as the race exits the Pyrenees.
A peloton of 177 riders took the start of stage 12 under the heat at Lannemezan. The Lotto-Soudal team set the pace of the bunch in order to prevent any attacks from going on before the intermediate sprint won by André Greipel at Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges (km 20).
There was no green jersey as birthday gift for the German sprinter as Peter Sagan took third place and maintained a slight advantage in the Points classification. Right after the intermediate sprint, Lieuwe Westra (Astana) and Bryan Coquard (Europcar) carried on their effort and Louis Meintjes (MTN-Qhubeka) rejoined them before a group of 22 riders was formed at km 27.
Rodriguez attacks the chase group with Kwiatkowski up the road already.
In that group were Lieuwe Westra, Jakob Fuglsang (Astana), Matthieu Ladagnous, Jérémy Roy (FDJ), Gorka Izagirre (Movistar), Michal Kwiatkowski (Etixx-Quick Step), Romain Bardet, Mickaël Chérel, Christophe Riblon (AG2R-La Mondiale), Jan Barta (Bora-Argon 18), Bryan Coquard, Romain Sicard (Europcar), Kristjian Durasek (Lampre-Merida), Dani Navarro (Cofidis), Sylvain Chavanel, Jérôme Coppel (IAM Cycling), Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha), Frédéric Brun, Anthony Delaplace (Bretagne-Séché Environnement), Louis Meintjes (MTN-Qhubeka), Georg Preidler (Giant-Alpecin) and Sep Vanmarcke (LottoNL-Jumbo).
World champion in action
Preidler was first at the top of the col du Portet d’Aspet and second to Durasek at the col de la Core where the bunch led by Team Sky had a deficit of 8.30 with 93km to go. World champion Michal Kwiatkowski, Preidler and Vanmarcke rode away from the rest with 76km to go in the valley just after the downhill of the col de la Core. Preidler who suffered from a pain in his right knee couldn’t hold the pace up to the Port de Lers where a chasing group was formed of Bardet, Rodriguez, Fuglsang, Sicard, Izagirre and Meintjes.
The peloton were uninterested in chasing them though and now had a deficit of 12.30.
Rodriguez goes solo with 7.5km to go
Between the Port de Lers and Plateau de Beille, the riders experienced stormy weather conditions as heavy rain and hail fell from the sky but Kwiatkowski and Vanmarcke forged on. After cresting the Port de Lers with only five seconds lead, they started the final ascent with an advantage of 1.50 over Bardet, Chérel, Rodriguez, Fuglsang, Sicard, Izagirre, Barta and Meintjes.
Kwiatkowski continued solo with 13.5km to go whilst behind him, after getting rid of Bardet and Fuglsang after a lot of attacks from Bardet and Rodriguez to try and get rid of the passenger Bardet, Rodriguez caught and passed Kwiatkowski with 7.5km to.
Left: Quintana attacks but only gains a few seconds before being reeled in. Right: Froome attacks to show his rivals there is plenty left.
Behind though the yellow jersey group was seing some late, too late really, attacks from Froome’s rivals. Successively, Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo), Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana (Movistar) all tried to escape from the yellow jersey group also composed of Thibaut Pinot (FDJ), Chris Froome, Richie Porte and Geraint Thomas (Sky), Tejay van Garderen (BMC), Pierre Rolland (Europcar) and Bauke Mollema (Trek).
Froome himself accelerated with 4.5km to go but there was no difference between the GC heads of state and the only move to succeed was a late one by Valverde who gained a single second on the rest.
The battle was over and Team Sky appear in control and it appears as though there will need to be to be some ‘creative’ attacking to put Froome into trouble as he was more than equal to the ones on the climb.
In pouring rain, Geraint Thomas was again more than just a perfect team-mate for Chris Froome as he still lies 5th overall after the Pyrenees. “I didn’t know what to expect but I’m feeling good. The legs are good. Now I’m in the shape of my life for sure. I’m going to play it day by day. Froomie gained time on the first day and in the next two he was very strong. He was again very good today. I think the morale is very good in the team. Hopefully we can keep together as a unit and hopefully keep it up up to Paris. I love it when it rains like that. I really enjoy it. It’s like being back home in Wales.â€
Nairo Quintana (Movistar) “It was a good work from everyone in the team. A difficult day, with really demanding climbs and, above all, serious temperature changes and rain in the finale. It took even more energy from us, but we stood it and attacked the leader several times. Sky managed to control all of them, as well ours as the ones from Alberto, Vincenzo… they dominated the situation pretty well and have shown to be strong, as well Froome as his team-mates”.
“We’ll keep dreaming and trying; there’s still a long way to go and everything won’t be decided until the final mountain stage. I feel well at the moment, we’re as strong as in previous days; I think my level shouldn’t go down in what’s left in this Tour, and should I keep it like today, I think we can try some good things until Paris. There’s much to cover, we lost some ground already, but there’s some good condition we’ll use to keep fighting till next Sunday.”
Chris Froome: “I didn’t expect the weather conditions to change so quickly. Personally, I prefer the heat. I was just happy to get through today’s stage. I was fortunate to have Richie Porte and Geraint Thomas all the time with me in the hill. It was definitely a team effort in finding the right kind of speed all day. When I accelerated myself with 4km to go, I was just testing the legs to see who was at the limit but everyone was still pretty fresh”.
“There wasn’t any attack by my rivals that was more threatening than another. I’m a bit more concerned about Nairo Quintana because from the attackers he’s the closest to me on GC. We haven’t seen Alberto Contador’s explosive attacks yet but maybe it’ll happen in the Alps. But I pay the same respect to all the guys who are three or four minutes down on GC”.
“I can’t let them go. They’ll have opportunities to attack me until we reach Paris, maybe in the crosswinds, maybe downhill, I expect it to happen anywhere. I wasn’t put under pressure by their accelerations today really. We have controlled. I had team-mates with me for the whole climb. Geraint Thomas has been fantastic again today. Riding as a helper is a role I’m familiar with. I’ve done it in the past”.
“Can he be on the podium like me with Bradley Wiggins in 2012? At this stage, nothing is impossible. For now, our first goal is to keep the yellow jersey. But there’s no big difference between 2nd and 5th on GC and I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t be up there at the end of the Tour de France.”
Alberto Contador: (above) “It was a difficult day. The first part of the stage it was very hot and then it rained. But little by little I felt better. We were all at the same level today. Everybody attacked. So did I, but it didn’t work. You must try again everyday and I hope that my sensations will return in the last week. Today, there was a lot of headwind and it was difficult to attack a team like Sky who impose such a steady pace.â€
