Report & Result – Tour of the Fens

A total of 79 riders lined up at noon outside ‘The Five Alls’ in Benwick High Street, just as the rain started in earnest. So eager was one rider that he tumbled from his machine within a couple of metres of the neutralised start and another rider’s electric gearing malfunctioned soon after.

Although the road surfaces were generally good, the overnight rain resulted in a number of punctures with the two Shimano neutral service cars kept busy from the outset. More than one promising young rider was left wondering what might have been. The race soon split into several groups with the back-markers pulled out as the race began to stretch over several minutes.

A crash on the final corner with 225 metres to the line was accepted in good grace and Rory Havis from the promoting St Ives CC was a worthy winner claiming the £100 prize. Runner-up, Jacob Hennessey, St Neots CC, also took the overall points prize winning an EVA Bike Box for his efforts.

Despite the weather and the many DNFs, the riders were very complimentary and were looking forward to riding the race again in 2016.
