Team News – Greipel’s Dream Comes True
For sprinters, the finish in Paris is the best playground for them in the Tour de France and for Andre Greipel, it was a dream comes true to win on the Champs-Elysées.
The final stage was also the shortest, just, as the peloton had to cover 109.5 kilometres between Sèvres and Paris. The stage traditionally started at an easy pace, but once the riders arrived in the centre of Paris, where the times for GC were taken, the speed was ramped up.
After a 40 kilometre run-up, ten laps of seven kilometre circuit needed to be covered and on the second lap, three riders decided to escape the peloton. The lead of Vanbilsen, Oliveira and Vachon didn’t go above the 40†though, because of the hard work of Lotto Soudal at the front of the peloton where Thomas De Gendt controlled the gap almost by himself.
Despite the break with Rohan Dennis joining them, looking good to stay away, the stage ended in the expected bunch sprint. In that, André Greipel was once again the strongest with his fourth win of the 2015 Tour.
André Greipel: “This is really a dream that comes true to win here on the Champs-Elysées. The circumstances weren’t that good due to the rain, I’m not very keen on that. Also because of my crash the previous weekend, I was a bit cautious as I still have some pain in my knee.”
“The last few days were very tough for me, I had to give all I got to be at the start today. But the fourth victory is a fact and it’s incredible to add this one to my record. This is the most awesome place to win a bike race”.
“My team mates did again an excellent job today. Thomas De Gendt, Tim Wellens, Tony Gallopin and Lars Bak really did their best to control the gap with the break. Adam Hansen, Marcel Sieberg and Jens Debusschere did the other preparations for the sprint.”
“Even Greg Henderson came especially from Spain to encourage us. It was an emotional moment to experience this victory with them. There were only five sprint opportunities in this Tour, the fact that we won four of them is just undescribable.â€
“I want to thank everybody that supports me: my wife and children, the trainers and the members of the team, my team mates and all partners of Lotto Soudal. Without this people it wouldn’t be possible to achieve all of this. I’m really thankful to all of them.â€
