News – Junior 25 for James Garratt

From Welland Valley Club

Those who have been following James Garratt (Welland Valley CC) would know how committed, focussed and passionate James is about all forms of cycling. Coupled with this is his power and ability to get aerodynamic on a push bike.

2015 has seen the junior member of Welland Valley CC dominate the club time-trial scene where he has been untouchable. In the six days prior to the championship, James had set two course records during the club events.

Having dipped his toes into contesting National events and produced impressive times, James went into the National Junior 25 determined to give it full gas and whatever the result, as long as he felt he gave it everything, the result would take care of itself.

First of the seeded riders, James wasted no time getting into a good rhythm, having pre-ridden the course a couple of weeks earlier. James was well aware the course was going to be tough but his minute man was soon on the horizon.

The yellow glow of the riders number ahead was just the target James needed to keep the pressure on the pedals. He past his minute man after five miles and at halfway, he caught a rider four minutes ahead as the hillier first half into a block headwind was taking its toll on his fellow competitors.

For the remaining twelve miles, James was alone and was fighting time. His smooth powerful pedalling was eating up the miles. As he sped through the finish line, James had smashed the course record of 57:08 by nearly a minute, recording a blistering 56:09.

James was the leader in ‘the clubhouse’ with ten faster riders on paper still to finish including last years champion and pre-race favourite Gabriel Evans. One by one his competitors failed to better the performance of the 18 year old.

James Garratt was crowned National Junior 25 mile Time-trial Champion beating his nearest rival Gabriel by 40 seconds. As James received the Champions Cap and Gold Medal he commented “After getting back to the HQ, I got changed and waited on the times. With 10 riders off after me, I thought that I would probably be beaten especially with the reigning champion last off. When the times all came in I couldn’t quite believe it, especially seeing the margin”.

Top 3
1. James Garratt, Welland Valley CC, 56:09
2. Gabriel Evans, Banks/Catford CC Equipe, 56:49
3. Matt Langworthy, Mid Devon CC, 57.51
