Report – Big Win for Robbins
Sunday 23rd August | by Graham Robbins

The 19 year old Bristol based Madison Genesis rider Tristan Robbins was the overall winner of the two stage one day Kalas Cup after taking eighth on the morning prologue time trial then picking up both primes and coming in second on the road race.

The race consisted of a demanding 5km prologue was followed by an120km (75mile) road race using part of the morning TT route. The event was based in the Somerset town of Somerton close to Glastonbury. The racing was promoted by Team Tor 2000 with sponsorship coming from cycle clothing company Kalas.

The prologue was held in the pouring rain as it rolled along from the outskirts of town before kicking up as it climbed Snap Hill. Getting the better of the conditions was Adam Kenway (SportGrub KUOTA CT) in a time of 7mins 38secs a second quicker than second place rider Wouter Sybrandy (Nuun- Sigma Sport London RT) with James Lowden (Neon-Velo Cycling Team) a further 5secs down.

After a break the peloton assembled in the town for a long run out up Snap Hill and through the finish area before the racing got underway for a total of seven laps. The rain had stopped and as the race progressed the sun came out and the course started to dry.

The race took three laps to get going when three riders clipped of the front and soon built a lead of 25secs, their lead went out a further 10secs as they completed the third full lap. The leaders were Alexander Murison (Easton Ritte), Tristan Robbins (Madison Genesis) and Rhys Lloyd (NFTO).

This leading group held the gap through the finish line on the start of lap four before being joined by Rhys Howells (Richardsons-Trek RT) just before the turn back onto the main road back towards Somerton. Once Howells made the junction the gap increased to 45secs as they set about working together. Soon afterwards Andrew Williams (Cwmcarn) made the jump across.

With the leaders now looking strong the bunch began to splinter, and at this point Murison became detached from the leaders only to be replaced by Will Bjergfelt (SportGrub KUOTA CT). These four took the bell with a 20secs lead.

At the turn towards the finish the four leaders were together but it was Williams who pulled away to solo across the line, Robbins pulled out a lead over Lloyd to take second on the line and more time bonuses.

Back at the HQ in Somerton riders awaited the results and awards as the race organisers slaved over the computer working out the final placing.
