A larger than normal turnout for Round 1 of the BWA West Midlands Cyclo Cross League supported by Ridley Bikes and Lazer Helmets saw thrilling racing all day topped off by an exciting finale where Junior Harry Yates got the better of road pro Luke Grivell-Mellor in a final dash to the line and a fast finishing Ben Wadley.

With over 700 riders registered for the BWA League Round 1 promoted by Redditch R&PCC and Beacon RC it needed slick organisation to cope with the mass turnout of riders collecting numbers, signing on and picking up timing chips and the GoRide club of 2014 delivered in style. A well signed event, plenty of sign on crew and ample marshals on a tweaked course loved by all.

Missing out on Tour of Britain selection for JLT Condor Luke Grivell-Mellor thought he would dust off his Cyclo Cross bikes and extend his season a little.

A select group established themselves early in the race with riders slowly dropping off the pace until it was just Grivell-Mellor, Pete Banham and Juniors Cameron Biddle and Harry Yates at the head of affairs. Banham took the race to the others going solo with 3 laps to go.

The Juniors seemed content to let the experienced road pro pull back Banham and when the catch was made with 1 lap to go it was the Junior off road stars attacking Grivell-Mellor going into the muddy technical section.

The crowd were eagerly waiting to see who would come out of the woods first and it was Grivell-Mellor followed closely by Yates and Wadley who had made his way through the field unnoticed with Biddle slightly distanced. Grivell-Mellor lacking the off-road practice of his younger adversary slightly misjudged the final corner and in the blink of an eye the ex Youth National Champion had a fantastic win by a wheel.

Beth Crumpton was a class apart in the Women’s race making her way through the Vet50+ field with only 5 holding off the flying mountain biker with Pete Busby taking the V50 win. The Youth Boys races were taken by Toby Barnes and Emile Alexander both of Lichfield CC and the Girls Alderney Baker and Josie Nelson. The V40 Men was taken by Andy Collis.
