Report – Roman City Road Race

Sunday 6th September  |  by Graham Robins

Chris Rothwell (Ride 24/7) the seventeen year old Swindon student won today’s Roman City RR promoted by Bath CC on a short punchy circuit close to Stonehenge in the heart of Salisbury Plain. Rothwell lead the bunch away from the HQ in Chitterne up the first climb and finished the race of in style sprinting the last 100 meters to take the win on the line.

The race was nearly four complete laps across the plain, through Tilshead and finishing on the climb above Chitterne, with each lap being ten miles in distance. The morning started sunny but there was a chill meaning some riders started in longs and full gloves.

Along with Rothwell on the initial climb through the neutralised section was Hayden Burton (Bath CC) with the peloton beginning to spread out. Over the top and on towards Shrewton the bunch re grouped. As the race completed the first full lap it swooped down past the HQ it was Neil Dunnage (Cotswold Veldrijden) who led the pack onto the climb again.

On the second lap a break of three riders tried to get away as the race headed back towards Tilshead. The three were William Griffiths (Southampton Uni RC), Alex Hart (Sarum Velo) and Thom Hayward (VC Venta) but as they approached the far end of the village the bunch re grouped.

With just over a lap to go Jake Hollins (Uni of Bath CC) had managed to build himself a 45secs gap but the peloton were all together and it took them until the turn at Shrewton to catch him but once they did it was all down to the final climb up towards the finish line. As the road levels out over the climb Kim Little (Merida Factory Racing) held a slender advantage but Rothwell opened out his sprint and caught and passed Little with time to get his hands up on the line.
