News – GS Metro Hill Climb

Sunday 20th September sees the second round of the N&DCA Hill Climb League – a 2 stage climb in picturesque Northumberland centred around the village of Hedley on the Hill. GS Metro are hosting the event and have an excellent field of 51 riders ranging from schoolboys to a handful of the finest hill climbers in the country. The winner of Round One Paddy Clark is road racing.

Stage One sees the riders tackle the climb of Hedley on the Hill where Luke Mullen’s 2013 course record of 4’22 will be tested.

N&DCA 2015 BAR champion Danny Grieves (GS METRO) gets things underway at 11:01. The big hitters are spread evenly throughout the field and the names to look out for are likely to be Jon Bayley (Gosforth RC whom has a 2nd place and 5th place already this season) and  Carl Donaldson (GS Metro) who despite another fine season of TT performance claims not to be a hill climber.

Nick Spencer (Blumilk.com) ordinarily keeps his powder dry in the early climbs but was 15th in last years Nationals, Ben Davis (Wheelbase Altura MGD) who will be riding his first season on the NE scene having had excellent results previously in the south west and last of the big hitters is Mick Jones (GS Metro) defending champion and reigning North East Hill Climb champion.

Giving hope to the old men is Michael Openshaw (Cestria CC) an ex GB international athlete who had a breakthrough season on the bike in 2014. Fiona Blackett (Bishop Auckland CC) has won two ladies events this season and goes head to head with 2015 ladies BAR champion ingrid Shepherd (Sunderland Clarion CC).

The second stage sees riders tackle the slightly shorter but steeper Eastgate Bank where Ian Lee holds the CR of 3’06.8.

The event has been kindly supported by The Feathers Inn where riders and spectators will recouperate after the event, Red Marine, Kitty’s Ginger Wine and CycleArt.
