World Masters Track Cycling Championships

Thirteen rainbow jerseys were awarded on day 5 of the 2015 UCI World Masters Track Cycling Championships at the Manchester Velodrome on Wednesday, October 7.

The Australians who have travelled from the other side of the world to be at the event, topped the table on the day with three Gold from Great Britain and the USA with two Gold medals each. The rest of the medals awarded were shared by six more nations, Italy, France, Argentina, Denmark, Finland and Canada.

In the Men’s Sprint for the 55 – 59 age category, the title was won by Italian Ferruccio Veschetti who defeated Aussie Gary Mandy two rides to nil in the final. The Bronze was won by Russian Vladimir Makeev who beat Kurt Sato of the USA, also two rides to nil.

In the other Men’s Sprint final of the day, for the 60 – 64 age category, Australian David Willmott added another Masters rainbow jersey to his wardrobe after he beat Jean Louis Duble of France. Robert Pelegrin of the USA denied Britain’s Paul Sydenham the Bronze medal in the other final.

France won their Gold medal in the Mens Pursuit for 65 – 69 Years after Gerard Louis Robert, the fastest qualifier, beat New Zealand’s Colin Claxton in the final by almost three seconds. There was no joy for the host nation again in the Bronze medal final as Steven Troseth of the USA was over four seconds faster than Graham Truelove (GBr).

In the only Scratch race of the day for Men’s 50 – 54 riders, the Gold went to Gustavo Faris of Argentina who beat heat two winner Geoffrey Baxter of Australia with Britain’s Michael Rice getting the bronze.

Day 5 saw all the Women’s time trials take place with Britain’s Madeline Moore the only rider under 37 seconds in the 35-39 age category to win the Gold from Jaana Hyvarinen of Finland and Louise Haston from Great Britain. The next age category up, 40 – 44 Years, was a win for Australia as Jessica Laws beat teammate Renee Covington by just under half a second in an Aussie 1-2. Susie Mitchell of Ireland was third.

The 45 – 49 age category was a victory for prolific winner at the masters, Janet Birkmyre of Great Britain who was three tenths fasters than fellow Brit Julie Cooper with Juliet Sprake making it a GB 1-2-3 getting the Bronze. Denmark won the Gold in the 50 – 54 event with Janni Bormann the only rider under 38 seconds in what is a new World’s best for the category. Debbie Capewell of Britain was second and Jayne Paine, also from Britain, in third.

The final Women’s time trial event was for riders 55 and over and this was won by Elizabeth Heller of the USA who beat compatriot Sandra North for the Gold in the 55-59 age category. The Bronze in that category went to Meriel Custance of Australia.

Winner of the Gold in the 60 plus category was won by Arja Scarsbrook of Finland who recorded the third fastest time in the 55 and over event. Silver in the 60 plus went to Bonnie Woodbury of the USA whilst Brenda Tate of Britain took the Bronze medal.

In a packed day of racing, there were also two Men’s Points races. In the 60 – 64 event, the Gold was won by Ivan Colig of Australia who was one of three riders to take a lap. The others were silver medallist James ‘Jimmy’ Rutherford of Great Britain and Chris Davis, also from Britain who took home the bronze medal.

In the other Points race for 55 – 59 year old riders, the Gold went to Canadian Sylvan Adams with Silver for Grant Tyrell of New Zealand and Keir Apperley of Great Britain the Bronze.

Day 5, finally, also saw the Men’s Team Sprint for riders aged between 35 – 44 take place and as ever, there were some creative names for some such as the winners from the USA, ‘It’s Raining Men’ (Ethan Boyes, Alvin Cobb, Kenneth Lo) who were clear winners over Team France (Arnaud Duble, Yann Dujarrier, Sebastien Thery).

The Bronze went to France as well with the riders being (Julien Muselet, Bruno Tanjon, Yann Le Normand) who beat the British trio of Anthony Bagnall, Tom Boulton and John Bagnall.
