News – Continental Welsh Wild West Sportive
Aberystwyth once again celebrates a festival of cycling in late May, culminating in what has become a well-established Mid Wales sportive. The event offers four distances and covers many of the locations from the popular BBC / S4C Crime drama ‘Hinterland’ , which is filmed exclusively in the county of Ceredigion.
Registration pricing is held at 2015 rates, and now includes a discount for team entries with a minimum of three riders. Sunday May 29th is the final day of ‘AberCycleFest’ and with Aberystwyth’s new Bandstand due to open in the near future, next year’s event will start and finish on the famous Victorian promenade.
Riders can explore the challenging local terrain on one of four routes which provide something for everyone. Whether you’re an experienced cyclist looking to take on the challenging ‘Cawr(114m)’ or ‘Mynach (70m)’ rides, or perhaps fancy a more relaxing tour of Ceredigion on the ‘Diafol (41m)’ or ‘Corrach (26m)’, you’ll see some breathtaking coastal scenery and rural landscapes.
All routes take in the views across the Dyfi estuary, looking north towards the Snowdonia range, whilst the three longer routes also climb the three miles towards the Nant y Moch reservoir. The longer routes then take in some of the most scenic and rural roads of Mid Wales, passing through the towns of Tregaron and Lampeter before heading back towards Aberystwyth for the finale. Professional riders who’ve ridden the Welsh Wild West include Team SKY’s Alex Peters, along with Dean Downing, Tom Stewart and Scott Davies, with 2016 pro’s due to be announced soon.
Full route details and online entry can be found at www.abercyclefest.com/sportive
Backed by Continental Tyres, the event will feature full tech support, four feed zones and an expo zone in the start and finish area, plus plentiful Welsh themed refreshments & goody bags for all finishers. AberCycleFest also includes a town centre criterium, a cliffside urban downhill MTB race and many fringe events during the week of May 23rd-May 29th.
Aberystwyth has become well known for its cycling events over the last five years. The first Aberystwyth Seafront Criteriums took place in 2010, some 19 years after the last ‘Round the Houses’ criterium and Tour of Mid Wales road race which were popular events throughout the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s.
The group collaborated with Sweetspot in 2011 to bring a round of the highly popular Tour Series professional criterium races to Aberystwyth, which to date has been the only Welsh round of the nationwide series which is featured on ITV4 each May and June.
The festival consists of many support events leading up to the evening professional Tour Series race, including races for over 250 local school children, a town vs gown cycle challenge and races for serious amateurs, along with an expo along Aberystwyth promenade featuring local and national exhibitors.
