News – Gold for Laura Trott at Euros
GB’s Golden girl Laura Trott wins another in the Scratch race at the European Championships to make it two from two
Like Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton in the previous generation of the GB team, Laura Trott is continuing to show how valuable she is in the Great Britain machine by winning her second Gold medal of the European Championships.
Laura Trott powered to the finish line on Friday evening with a stunning final lap in the Scratch race in Grenchen. Already a winner in the Team Pursuit, Trott timed her dash to the line perfectly. Although she left it late to bring back some riders out front, Trott said she was never too concerned.
“I just didn’t panic I guess. That little break went away and everyone was looking at me to work and I thought I didn’t need to work; it isn’t my race to lose. The field started to chase and it worked out perfectly, I ended up having a three lap lead-out, so I was pretty pleased to be honest.â€
Trott is now a nine-time European champion, but has her eyes on reaching double digits this weekend with the omnium kicking off tomorrow morning. “We were using it (Scratch race) as a bit of a tester for tomorrow really, because obviously the Scratch race is the first race of the Omnium. As it was a Scratch race and just 40 laps, we thought ‘why not, let’s do it’.â€
Sprinters Disappoint
It says a lot about GB’s success over the years that when the riders in the team are not contesting finals for medals, many fans are left disappointed. Or maybe that’s the ‘Hoy’ effect of not having the winning machine on the boards anymore.
With the riders well funded and looked after by the Great Britain system perhaps better than any other nation in Europe, fans expect their heros to deliver but in the Sprint events they were found wanting.
The Euro’s however are just one of many stepping stones to the Olympics and results like this year are not uncommon in the run up to the Olympics which dominate the ambitions of the race programme for the Great Britain team. Thankfully, the endurance team are delivering medals to prevent a riot from disappointed fans of the team!
In the Men’s and Women’s Sprint, GB came away from the competition with top eight finishes. In the Men’s Sprint, GB were unlucky to have Jason Kenny and Lewis Oliva go head-to-head twice in the sprint, first in the 1/16 finals after which Oliva came back through his repechage and then in the 5-8th place minor final where Kenny was fifth and Oliva eighth.
In the Women’s sprint, a rising star in the Women’s Sprint, Katy Marchant’s continued to impress making it all the way to the quarter-finals before being beaten by the very experienced campaigner Virginie Cueff of France. Jess Varnish went out of the chase for medals in an earlier round.
So both British riders were left to fight it out in minor finals with Marchant finishing 7th and Varnish 10th. Friday also saw day 1 of the Men’s Omnium where Jon Dibben was in ninth place after three races. Jon started the competition with a fifth place in the Scratch race and then a very good fourth in the individual pursuit before losing some ground in the Elimination race.
In the Men’s Points race, 19 year old British champion Ollie Wood finished 15th.
