News – Northey is NZ Crit Champ

Northey, who rides for Madison Genesis who were Pearl Izumi Tour Series Champions in 2015, showed just how much he wanted the title with a break for freedom on the first lap of the 40 minute race.

He was soon part of a group of eight riders who went clear mid-race and with six laps to go, the leading group was down to just four, Aaron Strong, Northey, young professional Dion Smith and World Team Pursuit champion Regan Gough.

Northey was never going to leave it come down to a sprint and used his skills after a few years of racing the British crit circuit, one of if not the hardest in the World, to go clear and win the title solo.

“It means a lot to win this. Crits are a big part of our racing in UK and get a lot of television exposure so it will be great to be able to wear the national jersey over there next year,” Northey said.

“It’s great to be able to race here at home in front of friends and family and even better to win. I am rapt.”

Elite men:
1. Mike Northey (Auckland) 40:12,
2. Regan Gough (Waipukurau) 40:17,
2; Dion Smith (Auckland) st,
