Geraint Thomas makes emotional return to London’s Olympic Indoor Velodrome on Saturday evening to race the London leg of the Revolution Series

Thomas won a gold medal in the Team Pursuit on the very same track at the 2012 London Olympics. The Welshman said, “It was strange actually, there is lots of fond memories; my legs feel a little different to how they were back then.

“It’s great to be back in this velodrome, it’s my first time since the Olympics.” The Team Sky rider didn’t give one of his career best performances and he was the first to admit it, “It was hard going after my long break. I got stuck in and hopefully when I return in Glasgow [Round 4 of the series] I can do better.

“It’s the biggest break I’ve ever had in the off season and I made the most of it but it’s time to knuckle down now.”

Thomas managed a third place in the Scratch Race and his teammate Pete Kennaugh finished second in the Points Race. Team PedalSure were the winners of the Elite Championship on the evening, the team combined Wim Stroetinga and Iljo Kiesse. Kiesse was equally as nostalgic, “I raced some of the Revolution [Series] in 2006 until 2010, I like the new classification and racing with the bigger teams. It’s good to be back.”

The Ettix-Quick Step rider, Kiesse, won the Points race and the Elimination race with teammate Stroetinga. In the Elite Women’s races, Emily Kay displayed her talents, dominating the proceedings winning the Points, Scratch and Elimination events. Kay showed great strength and knowledge of where her opponents were on the track, making sure she kept herself at the front of the race.

The Great Britain sprint squad were left disappointed, Callum Skinner made it to the final, however lost to Pavel Kelemen of Czech Republic. Lewis Oliva was knocked out in the quarter final by Matt Rotherham.

The HOY Future Stars kept up with the pace this evening. In the girl’s races, Georgia Hilliard won the Six-lap Dash and Anna Docherty won the Points Race. The competition was opened up for the boys at Round 3 as current leader, Rhys Britton is out of action from a broken collarbone. Hamish Turnbull won the Six-lap Dash for the boys, however no winner was recorded in the Points Race due to a crash.

The damage that was caused by the crash in the HOY Future Stars Points Race meant that the racing ended earlier than scheduled. As the damage was not able to be repaired immediately, the track was deemed unsafe for the riders.

The safety of the riders always come first and all HOY Future Stars riders that were involved in the crashed are safe and well. The competition will continue at Round 4 in Glasgow, on November 28th at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
