A legend of the Team Pursuit, Ed Clancy and former double world champion Becky James will return to GB duty in New Zealand in December

News – Ed Clancy & Becky James Return to Racing
Victim of an injury in September, Ed Clancy, is named in the team to travel to New Zealand for the World Track Cup (4-6 December) there alongside Becky James who has been out of the sport for almost two years, also with an injury.
Clancy returns to the racing in a World Cup where the team are sitting in a strong position for Rio qualification after strong performances in the World Track Cup and European Championships. This has allowed them to send a young endurance squad which will include the winners of the Gent Under 23 Six Day, Germain Burton and Mark Stewart along with Tour of Beaumont winner Chris Latham and Oli Wood.
The Women’s Endurance team is in an even stronger position when it comes to Rio qualification with the outstanding performances from the likes of their Team Pursuit and individual rides such as those from Laura Trott. So, like the men’s squad, the Women’s Endurance riders are youngsters out to get experience against the World’s best.
The riders representing Great britain will be Emily Nelson, Emily Kay, Manon Lloyd, Megan Barker and Abigail Dentus.
Sprinters needing points
The Rio qualification chase for points is not so good for the Sprinters in the GB team and whilst she hasn’t raced for almost two years at this level, the return of Becky James (pictured below) will be a boost to the sprint squad. The 23-year-old made her track comeback in August after 18 months out because of a knee injury and cancer scare.
Whilst her results from the British Championships showed there is work to do, the 23-year-old from a cycling family in Abergavenny still has high hopes of being at Rio for the Olympic Games and is the only British female sprinter outside of Victoria Pendleton to have won the rainbow stripes in recent years. Becky joins Jess Varnish and Katy Marchant in the Women’s Sprint team.
The Men’s Sprint team going to New Zealand includes Olympic gold medallists Jason Kenny and Philip Hindes who are joined by Lewis Oliva and Callum Skinner.
Great Britain Cycling Team technical director, Shane Sutton, said: “We’ll be going to New Zealand with the aim of scoring vital Olympic qualification points, particularly in the sprint events and it’s great to see Becky James come back into the fold.
“We’re in the fortunate position that our performance across men’s and women’s endurance has left us in a strong position in qualification allowing us to blood some of our younger academy riders.
“It’s absolutely vital that we expose them to the pressures of world class competition at a young age and this experience will undoubtedly stand them in good stead in the rest of their careers.â€
