Report & Results – Imperial Winter Series Rd 1

Race 1

The strong winds made the opening races extremely tough going but it stayed dry and although it was edgy at times the 4th cat. riders handled the conditions admirably.

56 riders started and although the speed whittled down the field the main group stayed together for the 40 minutes plus 5 laps’ pretty much until the last 2 km. The final 500 metres were critical to the results, uphill and into the gale. 17 year old Joseph Murray (London Dynamo) held off a charging Hadyn James (Reading C.C.) in a thrilling finish for a well deserved win.

Victor Aguirre (Handsling Racing) wins the Imperial Cycles random prize (30th place) and still has time to get down to Imperial Cycles for a tune up in time for the final rounds of the series!

The E123 race riders dealt with the conditions better as you would expect. Last year’s overall winner, Vincent Halpern, lined up with a very strong Handsling Racing team to support him among the 67 starters.

The man of the race showing great form was Imperial’s Tim O’Rourke who attacked from the start, he rode on the front for much of the race and seemed determined to wear himself out. Another rider showing great form was Ben Sumner of Beeline combining winter riding with cyclo-cross; after an initial early escape with Anthony Anderson (Sigma Sport) he settled back into the main field.

As usual Handsling’s Graham Crow played a big part in the attacks from the front. Sumner went clear again after 35 minutes, this time on his own but the gap hovered around 15-20 seconds until a mighty effort from O’Rourke and a gurning Peter Cole (Handsling Racing) allowed them to bridge, a brilliant sustained effort.

They worked well together and in the final 500 metres Sumner went clear for a solo victory, followed by O’Rourke and then Cole, with Will Ranoe (VCGH) just off the front of the main group. An exciting start to the 17th year of the Winter Series.
