The event may have had top road stars Peter Kennaugh, Elia Viviani and Mark Cavendish but it was the world class track stars that stole the show.

With the velodrome packed with spectators looking to be entertained with some action packed racing, the night had a great variety of acts to star on the boards.

From a derby match in the team pursuit between Team Wiggins and a GB foursome of hopefuls won by Wiggo’s riders, to the drama of the other races which at times were nothing short of brutal, the night was never short of action.

The quartet from Team Wiggins beat their Great Britain counterparts in a special team pursuit event at Round 5 of the Revolution Series in Manchester, January 2. GB was made up of Chris Latham, Ollie Wood, Kian Emadi and Mark Cavendish and set a time of 1.59.306, one second slower than Team Wiggins.

Both teams sacrificed a man after two laps but GB looked to struggle come the end, notably Cavendish. ‘The Manx Missile’ did however remind us all how he got his nickname and lead himself and Telegraph Allstars teammate Marc Hester to get a win in the Elite Championship Team Elimination race.

On the winning team was Jon Dibben, who also won the Points and Scratch races across the evening, leap-frogging Team PedalSure and now sit top of the Elite Championship leader board. Dibben said, “I wouldn’t say we dominated tonight because we definitely got a kicking in the last race [the Madison, won by team Maloja Pushbikers].”However the Southampton born rider was more in another race, “The team pursuit was big today – it was the most important event of the night.”

“We’ve done a lot of gym and speed work throughout the whole of December, and with it only being two kilometres, the coach [Heiko Salzwedel], wanted to see if that worked. The first km we did was a personal best by far, so we took it really seriously.”

It was a nail-biting show in all of the Elite Women’s Races. Laura Trott, Elinor Barker and Kirsten Wild headlined the evening and made each other work hard, especially Laura Trott who took 3 of out of 4 wins on the night. Emily Nelson would steal the victory from Trott in the final event of the evening, the Scratch Race.

Trott: “I was definitely made to work [in the Points Race], Elinor [Barker] and Emily [Kay], took me right down to the line and the race went down to the final sprint.”

In the men’s sprint competition Matthew Rotherham from Bolton, riding for Maloja Pushbikers was in electric form and didn’t lose a single heat all night. He beat National Sprint Champion, Lewis Oliva in the final.

Oliva went on to win the Keirin event, winning one heat and coming second in the other. Rotherham won the other heat and finished third in the other, losing to Oliva as the results were based on a count back.

Jessica Roberts and Lewis Stewart both kept their leaders jerseys in the HOY Future Stars competition after strong consistent performances from both of them. However, it was Fred Wright who won all 3 of his races and crept up to second place. Roberts won two out of three of the girl’s events.
