Feature: Lydia Boylan Q & A
1. When will you start your road season and what will be the first race?
Lydia: My road season will kick off after a short break after the Track World Champs in London. I will probably jump in and get started in Belgium at the end of March.
2. What races will be your targets for 2016 and why?
Lydia: As Irish National Champ, I’m definitely keen to defend that title at the end of June. Otherwise I’ll probably target some UCI races later in the season.
3. How will you spend the time on the bike between now and your first race in training? Long miles or cutting back to do top end efforts?
Lydia: Team Pursuit! I’m currently in Hong Kong days before the last World Cup of the track season. Then it’s all go to prepare for the Worlds at the beginning of March where I will hopefully target the Scratch race as well as the Team Pursuit.
4. What was your favourite Xmas present?
Lydia: Travelling as much as I do luggage is quite important so I was very happy with a new North Face backpack from my sister!
5. When it rains, which its doing a lot right now, is it turbo time or wrap up and get wet?
Lydia: I’m lucky enough to be based in Mallorca for the winter. I’m definitely a fair weather cyclist. If it’s raining heavily, you’ll find me on the turbo! But that doesn’t happen too much in Mallorca and most of the time we’re on the track training too.
6. If you could do any race in the world including the best ones in the world etc, what would it be and why?
Lydia: Road World Champs. Unfortunately the track season gets in the way of this usually but it’s a big goal of mine to represent Ireland on the road at Worlds.
7. What piece of food can you not do without where ever you are on the road during the season!
Lydia: Coffee!!! Most definitely coffee! I travel everywhere with my aeropress so no matter where I am I can make myself a good cup of coffee. Ask my team mates – it’s pretty vital for me and everyone around me! Ha!
8. What is your favourite music track when warming up for a race or on the turbo?
Lydia: Easy – The Prodigy, Omen.
9. If given the option, would you prefer normal brakes or disc brakes on your road bike?
Lydia:Â Not fussed! Anything that will be bring me to a stop!
10. What’s the spec of your race bike for 2016 and your favourite bits on it?
Lydia: S-Works Tarmac. I absolutely loved our team bike last year and very happy that we will be sticking with Specialized. My favourite component(s) has to be the Di2 groupset. Just amazing!
