Britain’s Dani King of Wiggle High5 fourth overall in Women’s Tour Down Under
News: Dani King 4th in Women’s TDU
Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling’s Nettie Edmondson took second place in the final sprint for stage four of the Santos Women’s Tour on the Victoria Park circuit, Adelaide, South Australia. The double Track World Champion, who won Sunday’s Rymill Park criterium stage was just beaten to the line by Kimberley Wells (High5 Dream Team) at the end of the one hour race, with overall leader Katrin Garfoot (Orica-AIS) in third.
Garfoot’s third place meant that she confirmed her final victory in the Santos Women’s Tour, while Wiggle High5 Pro Cycling’s Dani King’s ninth place on the stage meant that the Olympic Champion held on to her fourth place overall. The Olympic Champion from the track in London 2012 sees the result as a positive sign for her bid to make the road team for the next Games in Rio this summer.
“My aim is make the road team for Rio,†King confirmed. “Obviously I haven’t had a full season on the road before. I need to make an impression early. It’s also my first time training on the road through the winter. It’s good to know that my program has worked. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season now.â€
As well as her fourth place in the General Classification, King also finished the race with a considerable lead in the mountains classification, wearing the red and white polka dot jersey that she had held since the end of the first stage.
“It’s a good sign that I’ve won the KOM jersey for sure,†she smiled. “Obviously Rio is a super hard, tough, hilly circuit. The hillier the race, the more important the result. I’m going to have roles within in my team. I have such a strong team, and that means I’m playing a domestique role a lot of the time.
“Wiggle High5 have been incredible with letting everyone have their opportunities,†the hard-working Olympic Champion added. “Obviously I’m not going to be one that gets a lot of opportunities and I’m absolutely fine with that. I’m coming into my first road season, and I have to prove myself with Wiggle as well.â€
